1. Genre Activity:
1. Choose a genre from the envelope.
2. If needed, research the standard conventions of this genre.
3. Write a list of conventions that defines your assigned genre.
4. With your partner, rewrite the summary of Slaney’s article using the
conventions of your assigned genre.
5. Be prepared to share your findings and remediation with the class.
Reflections on Genre: (respond to these questions independently in your writing journal)
1. What is a genre?
2. How does genre shape (or act upon) the way a piece of communication is
written/composed?
3. How does genre influence (or act upon) the way a piece of communication is
read/interpreted?
4. Describe a situation in which either you as a writer/communicator or you as
a reader/interpreter was acted upon by genre in writing or interpreting a
piece of communication.
5. Brainstorm a list of 10 genres that are applicable to your research topic
and/or future career field (should the two overlap). These genres do not
necessarily have to be strictly text-based?
