Rel ationshi pto portfoliooutcomes: this assignment, like the previ ous one, will address critical
thinki ng, rhet orical awareness, and infor mation literacy (see assignment instructions for essay 2
for more details)
Inthe previ ous assignment, you defined a problem and identifiedits causes. This assignment will
build on that essay by aski ng you to research at least t wo sol utions to your chosen proble mt hat
have been put for ward by different stakehol ders. (We’ll talk about and identify stakehol ders in
class.) Once you’ve identified these sol utions, you will write an essay advocating for one of the m
(or a combi nation of them) while alsoinfor mi ng the audience about the other solution(s) and
explaini ng, in a respectful, non-judgmental way, why your sol ution is superior.
To compl ete this assignment, your essay shoul d incl ude the followi ng, inthis order:
1. Some background on the problemand its causes (mat erial fromessay t wo, in other
wor ds)
2. Infor mation about t wo or more possible sol utions that have been proposed by
different stakehol ders
3. A clear statement about whi ch sol ution (or combination of sol utions) you believe is
better
4. Evi dence supporting your clai ms
Specs:
- Essays shoul d be bet ween 1600-2000 words, or approxi mately 5-7 pages—by whi ch I
mean full pages.
- They shoul d be in proper MLAfor mat (see “ MLA For mat Checklist” on Blackboard).
- They shoul d incl ude at least five scholarly sources, which means you will need bot hin-
text citations and a Works Cited page ( we’ll talk about this more in class).
- They shoul d also be in 12-poi nt Ti mes Ne w Roman, or some ot her serif font. My
eyesight is poor, and sans-serifs fonts can be difficult for me to read.
- Essays shoul d be double-spaced, and you shoul d re move spaces bet ween paragraphs of
the same style (I’ll showyou howt o do this in class).
- Bot h first and second drafts shoul d be printed AND STAPLED, BEFORE YOU COME
TO CLASS. I do not carry a stapler, so don’t ask. Fi ve poi nts will be deducted fromthe
final grade of any unstapled essay. Fi ve poi nts will also be deducted if you have toleave
class to print.
