The Human Centipede Poster/ DVD Cover Analysis

Imagery: Camera shots, Lighting, Mise-en-Scene, Compositionetc…

The image that is on the front cover of the DVD cover is very disturbing
and makes you think about that the film is about before watching it. The
photograph that has been used for the front cover is a central mid shot/
close- up of the figure in the center.

The person who is at the top center of the composition looks as if they
are screaming; this shows that they are terrified or scared of something,
this automatically creates enigma. The multiple set of hands are in an
entrapment position, this means that they have been capture and forced
into that position. Their faces are unknown; this makes you think about
the situation they might be in.

Secondary form of artificial lighting that has been used to enhance the
front cover photograph is ‘Backlit Lighting’; this type of lighting equality
makes the figure look enhanced and slightly larger in scale.

The creator of the piece has used a vignette around the border of the
composition, using this form of technique helps you focus on the main
centerpiece. They have also use of frosted glass to make the figure in
the center be unidentified and creepy.

Colours that have been used within this piece are quite gloomy and dark
(Black, Green and Red), these could represent the decaying of a body
also terror/ suspense.Blood fingerprints have also been incorporated
into the cove this shows the morbid state of what is going to happen in
the film.

                          Typography/ Caption

The font that has been used for the title is quite simple in terms of style;
it looks similar to the font ‘Cambria’. Each letter has been place creates
to the sense of movement, the scale of some of the letters have been
enlarged this also show movement.

The films slogan at the top center the composition is: ‘Their flesh is his
fantasy’, this sickening slogan makes new audience thing about what the
film is about before thy see it.

The footnote on the cover identifies the directors, producers and actors
and actresses who are apart of the film: this makes people know some
of the interesting information about the film production.

                         Additional information

Use of binary opposites (Levi Strauss Theory): Human vs. Insect, Flesh vs.
Fantasy and Innocence vs. Guilty.

The back cover isn’t like a normal DVD back cover, this is because it has
an unusual sketch on the back instead of small thumbnails of the scenes
from the film. Also instead of a small plot they have put text referring to
the experiments and sickness that happens in the film.

Also on the back they have put a footnote with the four main characters
names, the creator of the film underneath the title and notifications of
what media based companies (newspapers, websites etc…) think if it.
