PLACE VALUE
Mathematics
Std. - 6
Write 85 in expanded form:
8x10 +5x1=80+5=85
we can say , in 85 the place value of 8 is 80 or 8 tens(i.e. 8x10) and
the place value of 5 is 5or 5 ones(i.e. 5 x1)
Similarly write 457 in expanded form:
400+50+ 7 =4x100+5x10+7x1
i.e. 4 is at hundreds place and 5 is at tens place and 7 is at ones place
 Place Value also known as local value.
Let’s do quick recap
Solution: In 36268, one 6 occurs at thousands place, =6000
the other 6 occurs at tens place so its value=60
the sum of these two place values of 6=6000+60=6060
Example 1: Write the place value of the two 6s (sixes) used in the
number 36268and find the sum of these two values.
1.A concrete number is a number which refers to a particular unit
and is meaningful such as 8metre,12 kg etc.
2.An abstract number is a number which does not refer to any
particular unit such as 8, 12,18 etc.

(i) In 20 kg, the unit is__________, which is taken _______times.
(ii) In 80m,the unit is _____________,which is taken _____times.
(iii) If a unit cm(centimetre) is taken 5 times, the corresponding quantity
is ____________.
(v)
Q1. Fill in the blanks:

(iv) In 6,439, the local value of 6 is_________
Q2. Fill in the blanks:
600
8000

Solution:
Place value of 3 =3000
Place value of 5 = 5
Difference = 3000 - 5 = 2995
(Ans) ∴ The difference is 2995.
Q3. Find the difference between the place value of 3 and 5 in the

Q6. Find the difference in the place values of two sevens in the
number 8,72,574
Home work assignment
Largest 1 digit number → 9
Smallest two digit number → 9+ 1=10
Largest three digit number → 999
Smallest 4 digit number → 999+1=1000
So , the pattern formed is:
Largest number of n digits +1 = smallest number of (n+1) digits
Smallest number of n digits - 1 = Largest number of (n-1) digits
Largest and the smallest numbers
