THE REGIONAL APPROACH TO
READING PHILIPPINE
LITERATURE
Lesson 1
Lesson Outcomes:
1. Recognize the contribution of each region to
Philippine literature.
2. Appreciate the value of literary pieces done by
21st century Filipino writers in various regions
of the country.
3. Write a feature article on a Filipino
contemporary author from other region.
Activity:
• What region in the
Philippines do you
belong?
• Can you name some of
the famous writers in
your region?
• Have you read any
literary piece of other
regions? What is/are the
title of the piece/s? Who
wrote the said piece/s?
introduction
During a 2014 conference in Cebu City, Senator Alan
Peter Cayetano remarked that the national government
should stop giving the bulk of its national budget to Metro
Manila alone. Providing equal resources to the country has
been a continuous problem in more than a century of our
independence as a nation. Our country has a total of 182
living languages. With these languages our ancestors
communicated, built their communities, and created unique
cultural products.
introduction
Separated by seas, cultures, and languages, the
Filipinos of today must consciously choose to
maintain a united front in order for all of us to be truly
equal and free as a people in one nation.
introduction
Perhaps our study of literature can help point
us toward the direction of understanding different
Philippine cultures across the country, and hopefully
this would provide the opportunity for a true sense
of pride to grow within us for being a part of this
nation.
Main Lesson
 It is imperative that we Filipinos should read as
much literature as we can from other regions.
 There is a need for more works from outside of
Metro Manila to be read across the country.
 It is the sad reality that even in the 21st century,
Filipinos tend to priviledge the popular and
sophisticated literatures of NCR, particularly Metro
Manila.
Main Lesson
 Whether it is comics or novels, Metro Manila
literature seems to lord it over the rest of the
country. Perhaps it is because the central
government, big universities, corporate
headquarters, and the big publishing houses are
all found in Metro Manila.
Main Lesson
 Literature from “the center” thus appears to be
more valid to the readers who do not question
the dated Manila-centric view of Philippine
literature.
For further reading, go online to read these two short articles:
Cristobal Zarco's “A Survey of Philippine Literature” and Isagani Cruz's
“21st Century Literature” (http://www.philstar.com/education-and-
home/2013/10/24/1248724/21st-century-literature.
QUESTION

the given online short articles) say
about regional literature on the
one hand and 21st century
literature on the other?
Main Lesson

regional division of the Philippines. Samples of 21st
century Filipino authors associated with each region
are listed in it. The writer's association with that

evaluation
 You are the editor of a literary section of a newspaper. You need to write a
500-word feature article on a Filipino contemporary (21st century) author
from outside your region. Do an online research on a noteworthy writer.
Do not limit yourself to those cited in the table of authors, but be on the
lookout for a lesser-known author you believe to be promising. Make sure
that your feature provides the following information: background of the
author, a short overview of the author's literary works (books, online or
print publications, etc.), a short sampling of the author's work/s together
with your commentary. End the article by highlighting what is the author's
contribution to contemporary Philippine literature.
enrichment
1. Go online and read Butch Dalisay's essay “Building the
National”(2010)
ding-the-national>.
2. Write a short paragraph summarizing Dalisay's argument.
3. Is Dalisay's essay convincing? Why or why not? How does
Dalisay use evidence? Discuss.
Summary
21st century technology can help propel the goal of disseminating
literatures from regions into something obtainable. With the help of the
internet, many contemporary authors from regions are publishing their
work online. Whether they are using their regional language, Filipino, or
English, these young authors are beginning to speak to a national
audience about their reality.
While it is true that regional literature has been overlooked for so
long, perhaps 21st century technology, particularly the Internet, can
help build bridges across the archipelago for us to be able to indulge in
regional literature.
THANK YOU! 

LESSON 1-THE REGIONAL APPROACH TO READING PHILIPPINE LITERATURE.pptx

  • 1. THE REGIONAL APPROACH TO READING PHILIPPINE LITERATURE Lesson 1
  • 2. Lesson Outcomes: 1. Recognize the contribution of each region to Philippine literature. 2. Appreciate the value of literary pieces done by 21st century Filipino writers in various regions of the country. 3. Write a feature article on a Filipino contemporary author from other region.
  • 3. Activity: • What region in the Philippines do you belong? • Can you name some of the famous writers in your region? • Have you read any literary piece of other regions? What is/are the title of the piece/s? Who wrote the said piece/s?
  • 4. introduction During a 2014 conference in Cebu City, Senator Alan Peter Cayetano remarked that the national government should stop giving the bulk of its national budget to Metro Manila alone. Providing equal resources to the country has been a continuous problem in more than a century of our independence as a nation. Our country has a total of 182 living languages. With these languages our ancestors communicated, built their communities, and created unique cultural products.
  • 5. introduction Separated by seas, cultures, and languages, the Filipinos of today must consciously choose to maintain a united front in order for all of us to be truly equal and free as a people in one nation.
  • 6. introduction Perhaps our study of literature can help point us toward the direction of understanding different Philippine cultures across the country, and hopefully this would provide the opportunity for a true sense of pride to grow within us for being a part of this nation.
  • 7. Main Lesson  It is imperative that we Filipinos should read as much literature as we can from other regions.  There is a need for more works from outside of Metro Manila to be read across the country.  It is the sad reality that even in the 21st century, Filipinos tend to priviledge the popular and sophisticated literatures of NCR, particularly Metro Manila.
  • 8. Main Lesson  Whether it is comics or novels, Metro Manila literature seems to lord it over the rest of the country. Perhaps it is because the central government, big universities, corporate headquarters, and the big publishing houses are all found in Metro Manila.
  • 9. Main Lesson  Literature from “the center” thus appears to be more valid to the readers who do not question the dated Manila-centric view of Philippine literature. For further reading, go online to read these two short articles: Cristobal Zarco's “A Survey of Philippine Literature” and Isagani Cruz's “21st Century Literature” (http://www.philstar.com/education-and- home/2013/10/24/1248724/21st-century-literature.
  • 10. QUESTION  What do these articles (referring to the given online short articles) say about regional literature on the one hand and 21st century literature on the other?
  • 11. Main Lesson The following table presents the current regional division of the Philippines. Samples of 21st century Filipino authors associated with each region are listed in it. The writer's association with that region is established in two ways: it is the writer's birthplace or the writer settled in that region.

  • 19. evaluation  You are the editor of a literary section of a newspaper. You need to write a 500-word feature article on a Filipino contemporary (21st century) author from outside your region. Do an online research on a noteworthy writer. Do not limit yourself to those cited in the table of authors, but be on the lookout for a lesser-known author you believe to be promising. Make sure that your feature provides the following information: background of the author, a short overview of the author's literary works (books, online or print publications, etc.), a short sampling of the author's work/s together with your commentary. End the article by highlighting what is the author's contribution to contemporary Philippine literature.
  • 20. enrichment 1. Go online and read Butch Dalisay's essay “Building the National”(2010) <http://www.gmanetwork.com/news/story/184020/opinion/buil ding-the-national>. 2. Write a short paragraph summarizing Dalisay's argument. 3. Is Dalisay's essay convincing? Why or why not? How does Dalisay use evidence? Discuss.
  • 21. Summary 21st century technology can help propel the goal of disseminating literatures from regions into something obtainable. With the help of the internet, many contemporary authors from regions are publishing their work online. Whether they are using their regional language, Filipino, or English, these young authors are beginning to speak to a national audience about their reality. While it is true that regional literature has been overlooked for so long, perhaps 21st century technology, particularly the Internet, can help build bridges across the archipelago for us to be able to indulge in regional literature.
