4. IMPORTANCE OF OILSEEDS
• Fats and oils are important ingredients of human food.
• Our national consumption of edible oils is around 3.726 million tons, of which about
86 % is met through imports.
• Import bill of edible oils is second to petroleum and petrol products.
• Annual per capita consumption of edible oils and ghee in Pakistan is about 14
kilograms (kg) compared to about 3kg in Europe.
5. BRASSICA
In Brassica following crops were under cultivation on which I worked during my
internship period:
• Brassica napus and B. juncea.
Sr. No. Characters B. napus B. juncea B. compestris
1. Common name Gobhi Sarson Raya Toria
2. English name Rapeseed Mustard Field mustard
3. Mode of Pollination Often-Cross pollinated Self-pollinated Cross pollinated
4. Leaf color Dull green Lush green Dark green
5. Leaf Stalk Sessile leaves Pedicellate leaves Lobed leaves
6. Seed shattering Shattering Non-shattering Non-shattering
7. Silique size Long Short Medium
6. Pedigree Selection
• In the pedigree selection
procedure, selection for plants
with the desired combination of
characters is started in F2 generation
and continued in succeeding generations
until genetic purity is reached.
7. PEDIGREE SELECTION AT AARI
• Different generations were grown like F2, F3, F4, F5 and F6.
• Different trials were also under cultivation (PYT, AYT, and MYT).
• Gene pool was also grown for germplasm maintenance.
8. Work Done
• Selection at different generation levels
• Selection from different trials.
• Data collection
• Emasculation and pollination
9. LINSEED
• Botanical name: Linum usitatisimum L.
• Family: Linaceae
• Genus: Linum
• Chromosome number: 2n = 30
• Linseed is an annual and self-pollinated crop
• It has 32-44% oil contents.
• Also important as an ornamental plant
10. FIELD WORK AT LINSEED
• Emasculation and pollination
• Data collection
12. SUNFLOWER
• Sunflower has two sowing times, spring and autumn.
• Head of sunflower is called capitulum.
• It consists two 2 types of florets
i.e. Ray floret(sterile) and disc floret(fertile).
Ray Florets
Disk Florets
14. 3 LINE SYSTEM
• A line: Male sterile line
• B line: Maintainer line
• R line: Restorer line
• In 3-line system A line (CMS line) is maintained by crossing with B line up to 5-6
generations and its fertility is restored by R line.
15. SOYBEAN
• Botanical Name: Glycine max
• Genus: Glycine
• As soybean is not a traditional oilseed crop of Pakistan, Researchers are trying to
develop varieties for Pakistan region.
• For the same purpose there was an experiment under process “Screening of Soybean
genotypes against heat stress.
16. WHAT WAS THE EXPERIENCE
• Crossing of different oilseed crops
• Selection criteria of different oilseed crops
• Data Collection
• Data Entry
• Paper Writing
