2. Geography
Galway is situated in the north-west of Ireland, in
the Connacht and it is one of the biggest city of the
Ireland.
3. RIVER & LAKES
• Lough Corrib is situated in the
north of Galway and the name of
the city derives from it.
• The river Corrib flows through
Galway for 6 km.
4. HISTORY
In 1124 Turlough O'Connor,
the king of Connacht, built a
castle which became the city
of GALWAY.
During the 1600s the city
remained loyal to Britain, but
then it became the ally of the
Catholic Confederation of
Kilkenny.
After 1691 the great families
of Galway were ruined and
the city didn’t fully recover
until the great economic
bubble of the 20th century.
5. Irish Gaelic
Galway is the capital of the
gaeltacht, the Irish Gaelic
area and it is visited by many
tourists for its historical,
cultural and particular
centre. A part of the plot of
the book The Dead by James
Joyce is set in Galway and
Joyce’s wife, Nora Barnacle,
was born here.
6. Main monuments
• On Shop Street, the main street of
Galway, there is Lynch’s Castle and
today it is the seat of the Allied Irish
Bank.
7. Another chruch is the Cathedral of Our Lady Assumed into
Heaven and Saint Nicholas. It is bigger than St. Nicholas Church
and was built in 1965.
8. National University of IRELAND
This is the National University of Ireland and with those of Cork and
Dublin form the Queen’s National University. Many students attend this
college.
9. SPORT
The national sport is rugby and so there are many teams.
The most famous rugby team is the Galwegians
10. Means of transport
• The port of Galway is the most
important in the north west of
Ireland and is located in the
eastern part of the bay of Galway.
• Galway has an airport just outside
the city, Galway airport, which
offers flights to other cities in the
UK and the Aran Islands
11. FOOD & DRINK
Galway is an important fishing
port and is famous for its fresh
fish and seafood. Salmon is one
of the local specialties.
Like other Irish cities, Galway
has a locally brewed beer.
The most famous is the Galway
Hooker, produced in a brewery
in the area and sold in the city.
12. EVENTS
The Galway Races is an Irish horse-racing festival that starts on the last Monday
of July every year .The busiest days of the festival are Wednesday, when
the Galway Plate is held, and Thursday, when the Galway Hurdle and Ladies'
Day take place.
