Intervention in an ancient historical dwelling
The Bonaparte Hotel is the result of an intervention in
one of the most historical dwellings in the centre of
Chiclana, since that’s where Joseph Bonaparte (Napo-
leon´s brother and King of Spain from 1808 to 1813)
lived during the French invasion of the Iberian Peninsu-
la.
The project’s intention is to maintain the essence of the
little that remains from the living space regaining the
original holes in the façade and, especially, regaining
the interior columned courtyard, which has been inten-
sely modified over time.

The aim of this project is to endow the centre of Chicla-
na with a city hotel that can live up to the ones situated
on the coast. The project also counts with a restaurant
for the enjoying of andalusian gastronomy, both for
guests and outdoor public.

The regaining of the courtyard is the most important intervention of the project since, even though it is not
of great size, it maintains the essence of the typical courtyards of andalusian architecture. The whole, once
new columns and arches were placed where they once stood, encloses and protects itself with a new double
heighted deck, through which light comes in indirectly, creating an intimate space in which to keep and
preserve the remains of the past, as if it were a museum.

Early in the 17th century a Japanese expedition led
by samurai Hasekura Tsunenaga arrived in the
Sevillian town of Coria del Río, in order to establish
commercial relations between Japan and Europe.
While Hasekura and other leaders continued their
journey to Madrid and Rome, members of the expedi-
tion decided to wait in Coria until they arrived, event
which would happen seven years later.
When the time to return to Japan came, several of the
members who had waited in Coria decided to stay in
the village since they had had offspring.
At that time, the priest who baptized did not know how
to write Japanese surnames and opted for the easiest
option: to surname the child with the name of the
father’s country of origin.
Four centuries later it is very common to find the surna-
me “Japan” among the inhabitants of Coria, a fact that
has encouraged interest between the two cultures,
there having even been encounters between Coria and
Sendai, city from where the Japanese expedition
departed.
In order to perpetuate the bond of brotherhood, the
House of Japanese-Spanish Culture is planned, a
pavilion designed to accommodate and expose the
two cultures and which is the head of the park’s new
project; it is more linear and includes new species
such as the Japanese cherry tree.
9. 03New spaces for culture: theater
in Sanlúcar de Barrameda (Cádiz)
The project is a double cultural space, one exterior and one interior, designed according to the technical recommendations of the New
Spaces for Culture elaborated by the Junta de Andalucía. These are two scenic spaces located on a plot of land in the beachfront. The
exterior auditorium consists of two tiers from which the sea can be seen as protagonist on the open stage and serves as support to the
main building of the project: a theatre with capacity for 400 people that has on its ground floor another smaller room for Children's plays
and shows, storage, cloakroom, toilets, tasting service and control room. On the top floor are the boxes, dressing rooms, administration,
projection booth and toilets. The parking area, with more than 100 parking spaces, is placed at a lower level in order to protect the image
of the whole, avoiding the parked vehicles from being seen.
