urbanized
area

the
municipality, comprising the
city, has a population of

36,148

this statue dates back to
the eighteenth century and
was carved in stone. The
four busts are depicting
the four continents, as an
allusion to the "four
corners of the World". The

completed a cultural centre in Viana do Castelo, which is
designed to look more like a machine than a building

Architecture, where he

awarded the Pritzker
Architecture Prize in
2011 (the prize was
awarded for his work
including
Estádio
Municipal de Braga, the

Museum in Cascais) and
the Wolf Prize in Arts in
2013

9. The new Town Library, authored by the architect Siza Vieira, is located between the Lima river and the historic center of the city
10. The building occupies a total
area of 3.130 m2 and
develops in two floors, lying
in the ground floor the
technical services, work
offices and for consultation
of reserved, deposit area,
multipurpose room, bar,
service desk, storage room
and sanitary facilites. The
upper floor possesses a
large reading room and a
children’s section, work and
multimedia rooms, more
restricted areas for reading
and workshops of artistic
expression. This floor has,
also, a reception atrium,
service
desk
and
reprographic service.
The natural light floods the
several spaces, especially
the reading ones.
11. In 1992 Siza
Vieira was
awarded with the
renowned Pritzker
Prize for the
renovation project
that he
coordinated in the
Chiado area of
Lisbon, a historic
commercial
sector that was all
but completely
destroyed by fire
in August 1988
Siza was
awarded by the
Venice
Architecture
Biennale (13th
Edition) with the
Golden Lion for
lifetime
achievement
(2012).
12. Eiffel Bridge (19th century) Open in June 30, 1878, at the
height of the iron architecture, under the design and
calculations of the prestigious Eiffel House, the metalic bridge
over the Lima river came not only to allow the rail traffic, but
also replace the old wooden bridge that connected the São
Bento yard in Viana do Castelo to the left margin of the Lima
river (Darque).

length and 6 meters of
width, it were necessary
more than 2.000.000
kilogram of iron to the
construction
of
the
decks based in nine
pillars in stonework of
granite,
whose
foundations reach to 22
meters.

19. The Gil Eannes
Hospital-Ship, built
in Viana do Castelo
in 1955, supported,
for decades, the
Portuguese
cod
fishing fleet that
operated in the
Terra Nova and
Greenland
sandbanks.
The
conversion project
turned it into a
Museum
Centre
and
a
Hostel,
providing to the its
visitors
an
unforgettable
experience. Today
it is assumed as an
atraction pole for
Viana do Castelo,
having
received,
since its opening to
the public in 1998,
aproximmately
400.000 visitors.

22. 25 April´s Monument
This monument is situated in
the Plaza de la Libertad, on
the banks of the Lima River.
It
was
constructed
to
commemorate
the
25th
anniversary of the Carnation
Revolution (Revolução two
Cravos)
that
ended
dictatorship in Portugal. It is a
modern structure, consisting
of a porch made of bronze,
from which hangs a broken
chain, symbolizing the end of
oppression.
The
whole
square jets out into small
sources that make a kind of
road up to the porch. In this
square is the Viana Welcome
Center, municipal tourism
office and ferry station that
does river cruises on the river
Lima. From its part one of the
main streets, the Avenida
dos Combatentes da Grande
Guerra, which ends in the
station.

Pero do Campo Tourinho was donee of the captaincy of Porto
Seguro. On May 27, 1534 was awarded the captaincy of Porto
Seguro by D. João III, given the threatening presence of the
French
Tourinho traveled to Brazil in 1535 to take possession and
demarcate their land. He took about 700 people.
He lived 11 years in Porto Seguro and there left the mark of his
genius building villages, forts and mills. Cleared the land,
organized fishing, fought the Indians.
Tourinho died in Portugal in 1553, buried in Lisbon.
Porto Seguro is a city located in Bahia state, Brazil; the region
surrounding Porto Seguro was the first to be discovered by
Portuguese navigators in the current Brazilian territory.
Coat of Arms is composed by a rammping bull .
The coat of arms is placed in a magestic fountain in Belem (Fonte
Luminosa) in front of Jerónimos Monastery together with 49 other
coat of arms of important personalities from the time of
Portuguese Discoveries.

Gil Eanes Naval Museum, on the Dock - A floating naval hospital constructed in 1952 and which operated until 1973. It is now open to the public as a kind of museum, housing the original equipment. The ship has operation rooms, communication equipments, refrigerating chambers and a reinforced hull. It was restored by a group of locals. It was then adapted to become a youth hostel and is one of the city's biggest attractions.
