THE CAPITAL OF CATALONIA: BARCELONA  It is the second largest city in Spain in both size and population.  In a privileged position, between the sea and the mountains, Barcelona is the most cosmopolitan, modern and avant-garde city in Spain and it has been renewed for the 1992 Olympic Games.  It has a population of 1.510.000.  Rich art and architectural heritage.  It has its own language, culture and history.  It is a polifacetic and cosmopolitan city. 4

You will be caught by a warren of narrow streets and medieval gothic palaces which raise as evidences of past history. They were built on top of Roman ruins. The city was founded by the Romans, who named it BISBE STREET Barcino. Romans left their imprint, including their language, Latin. Catalan is a Romance language. 5
  6. 6. POLITICAL BARCELONA GENERALITAT PALACE Nowadays, Generalitat de Catalunya is Catalonias organ of government. It comprises a President, an Executive team and a Parliament, which is one of the most ancients in Europe. Its jurisdiction is defined by a Statute of Autonomy and it shares political power with the institutions of the Spanish state.THE PARLIAMENTThe Parliament building is locatedin Barcelona, in Ciutadella park. 6

CULTURAL BARCELONA Founded in 1847, in the middle Barcelonas famous Ramblas, the Gran Teatre del Liceu is an opera house that has retained its role as a culture and arts centre throughout its history. This building represents one of the symbols of the city. THE LICEUCONCERT HALL PALAU DE LA MÚSICA CATALANA With one hundred years of history, the Palau de la Música Catalana (1908) is one of the main points of Catalan musical life. 9
  10. 10. CULTURAL BARCELONA HUMAN TOWERS THE SARDANAThe sardana is Catalonias most popular dance. Since the 19th century, teams of Catalan people of all ages and classes have gathered to build spectacular human towers, or “castells”. Their motto is “strength, balance, courage and sense”. Nowadays, this tradition remains very much alive. 10

DELICIOUS BARCELONA Catalonias most famous and characteristic culinary speciality is pa amb tomàquet (bread rubbed with tomato and olive oil), which is often served with excellent home-produced pork sausages. Other dishes include: escudella i carn d’olla, a hearty winter stew, cargols a la llauna (roasted snails), escalivada (char-boiled vegetables) and crema catalana (vanilla custard). THE BOQUERIA MARKET The Boqueria was a merchant town that is located in the Rambla. It is the largest one in Catalonia. In addition, this venue has turned out into a place where all kind of local fresh and exotic products can be bought. A very popular tourist attraction! WINE AND CAVA Wine is another key feature in any Catalan meal. Wines have been grown all over the country for centuries and wine is produced under ten regional labels of origin. Cava 11 sparkling wine has its own one.
