not only my free time, but also as a student in the Sport Science Department at Stellenbosch
Universityand then as a profession with a variety of companies and organisations. I also feel that I
can contribute in more meaningful fields to South African society too and it was this belief that

drove me to undertake a Master’s thesis (click here to download the PDF version of my thesis)
focusing on student preparedness for university education.
Education, sports, social development,health,finance,politics,currentevents and the environment
are issuesthatI feel particularly strongly about, as I believe that South Africa has a great deal to do
in these fields if we are to facilitate the development of a more equitable society and sustainable
society. Asan editor and journalist I am seeking a role in which I can contribute creatively to a title
which excites me, inspires me, and challenges me to develop as an editor, writer, leader, and as a
person. Ifeel thatmy provenexperience as a journalist, editor, social sciences researcher, creative
writer and resourceful problem solver would be an asset to any organisation. In applying for the

role.
Throughout my educational and occupational career thus far I have actively sought roles that have
challenged my boundaries and provided the stimulus for personal development. Two key areas in
which I have had the opportunity of honing my skills in recent years are the areas of project
managementandleadership.DuringmyMastersresearchIran the StellenboschUniversity’s English
Departmentelectronic marking programme, which required the coordination of over thirty tutors,
ten lectures and one thousand students. Given the resistance to the programme by some of the
lecturesitalsorequiredagreatdeal of humanresourcessensitivityandleadership. In a more recent
position,withIntegratedMedia,mytitle asEditorinnoway encapsulated the entiretyof myrole.As
Full Sus and Full Stride are very small publications I at times needed to write up to half of the copy
for the publicationsaswell as coordinate and cajole between fifteen and twenty unpaid freelance
contributors, fulfil all the traditional editorial tasks,manage the distributionof the titles, oversee the
printing, and complete a wide variety of miscellaneous tasks – from managing photoshoots to
problemsolvingonatightbudget. Thisrequiredconstantorganisational flexibility, leadership skills,
and the abilitytoworkand make decisions under pressure to provide the editorial direction to the
publication.
As of August 2015 I started out as a freelancer. Though I have also decided not to spurn the
opportunity of full time employment should the right position become available. In a freelance
capacityI am currentlythe MediaManagerfor DrylandEventManagement,aswell aswriting scripts
for Bigshot Media and contributing to Swim.BikeRun, Mountain Bike Magazine South Africa and
Road Bike Magazine for the niche publishing company Electric Ink. I am currently looking for
opportunities to foster my own personal growth as a writer by contributing to a more socially
responsible and meaningful sector of the publishing industry than sports’ media. Though I love
workinginthe sportssector I feel Ineedtodiversifymyportfolio and put my skills to use in a sector
where they can help make a more significant positive impact on the lives of the readers.
Work Experience
Media Management: Dryland Event Management (September 2016 - ). As the Media Manager for
DrylandEventManagementIam responsible forthe mediaplanning, overseeing of sub-contractors
(includingtelevisioncrews,photographersandpublicrelationsagencies) andthe social media for 12
mountain biking and trail running events, including the Union Cycliste Internationale graded Cape
PioneerTrek,TankwaTrekandAttakwasExtreme MTB Challenge.The positionrequires a great deal
of organisational skill along with the ability to plan strategically and communicate those plans
effectivelytoa large groupof freelancers.Iamalso the touch point for all external media enquiries
for Dryland Event Management event.
Editing: Integrated Media (February 2013 – September 2016). I am currently employed as the
freelance editorbythe independentpublisher,IntegratedMedia.My portfolio entails the planning,

coordinationof contributorsandadvertisers,copyeditingand - for a large part - writing copy for the
mountain biking newspaper Full Sus and the Trail Running publication, Full Stride. I also supply
features and news items for the Tops at Spar custom title, which is also published by Integrated
Media, Cheers.I formedpartof the small teamwhichlaunched FullSus in April 2013, and I conceived
and brought to fruition the trail running sister publication Full Stride, which launched in December
2014. I am also responsible for the overseeing of the printing of Full Sus and Full Stride at Paarl
Media’sCold Set plant in Paarden Eiland and liaising with the distributors to ensure both titles are
delivered to the network of independent outlets in good time. As such I have gained a massive
amount of experience in the publishing industry in a very short space of time.
Script Writing: Bigshot Media (2010 - ). I was approached to write the scripts for the IronMan,
IronMan 70.3 and IronMan 5150 South Africa events, The Cape Argus Cycle Tour, The Grape Escape
Mountain-bike stage race, the Karkloof Classic Mountain-biking Festival and the Berg River Canoe
Marathon television productions. This required me to write the script for the voice over, after the
production teamhadmade the final visual and background audio edits. The final shows were aired
locallyonSuperSportand inthe case of Iron Man, internationally. I have also worked with Big Shot
Media on the conceptualisation for advertisements for Prologo – the bespoke cycling gear
manufacturers – and the proposal for a television show with one of South Africa’s top celebrity
chefs.
Digital Magazine Production: Tankwa Trek, Trans Karoo and Sani2c (2014). In association with the
Bigshot Media television production team I have produced four digital magazines for the
aforementionedmountainbike races. The concept began with the post-Tankwa Trek magazine and
was refinedforthe TransKaroowhere we produceda digital magazine for the pre-race briefing and
a post-race magazine. The concept was then pitched to Nedbank and a post-race publication was
producedforSani2c and distributedtoall 3600 entrantsof the Sani2c Trail, Adventure and Race. To

Project Management: Stellenbosch University, English Department Electronic Marking Programme
(2011 & 2012). The English Department at Stellenbosch University sort a more effective means of
markingwhichprovidedameasure of standardisationof feedback/advice for students, encouraged
students to take a more active role in their learning process and sped up the marking process for
tutors and lecturers. After a consultation process along with the Head of Department Professor
Shaun Viljoen and Ms Jenifer Rees, a fellow postgraduate student I helped develop the Online
Writing Laboratory programme upon which the Electronic Marking programme was based. It
incorporates website based feedback for correcting common student writing errors, a marking
system using track changes and comment balloons in Microsoft Word and a post essay feedback
formwhichidentifieshighand low end issues which students need to address in their writing. The
programme thoughbyin large popularwithstudentsreceivedstrongoppositionfromsome lectures
who still prefer to mark by hand with a pen on paper, and as such it required a great deal of
negotiation skill to keep the programme running smoothly. Once the programme was up and
runningandMs ReeshadgraduatedinMarch 2011 I was taskedwiththe general day to day running
of the programme, which I did until my research was completed in December 2012.
Journalism: Electric Ink (2016 - ). As an independent niche publishing company Electric Ink
specialisesinproducingpremiumhighglossquarterly publications. Given my background in cycling
and mywork on the scriptsfor the IronMan SouthAfricaeventsIwasideallyskilledtostandin as co-
editorforthe regulareditorof Swim.Bike.Run andIronMan South Africa Magazine,while she was ill.
I then continued to contribute and provide specialist insights for the triathlon publications, the
formerof whichis the newsstandeditionandthe latterthe editionwhichissenttoall participantsin
IronMan SouthAfricaevents.Fromassisting with these publications it was a natural progression to

contribution for the mountain bike specific Mountain Bike Magazine South Africa and the road
cycling specific Road Bike Magazine. For both titles I provide editorial input and write the gear
sections, this requires an in-depth knowledge of the cycling industry’s products.
Soccer Laduma (2010 and2011). Asa freelance journalistworkingforthe biggestfootball publication
in South Africa I was a member of the after-hours team which provided content for the Soccer
Laduma webandmobi sites.Iwasresponsibleforwritingmatchreportsona variety of PSL, Cup and
Bafana Bafana games, which had to be uploaded directly onto the website. The Soccer Laduma
readersexpectin-depthmatchanalysis,assoonas possible afterthe final whistle.I therefore had to
write and edit the match report as quickly and as accurately as possible. It is high paced, but
incredibly rewarding, as thousands of readers view the article within hours of it being uploaded.
Zig Zag and Wavescape (2011). As an avid surfer and a member of the Maties Surf Club, I
approached Zig Zag and Wavescape to cover the 2011 University Sport South Africa Surf
Championships.Foreachpublication I wrote separate introductory stories and daily reports on the
three dayscompetition,whichwere publishedontheirwebsites.Asthere wasnostaff photographer
present I had to fulfil the roll of photojournalist simultaneously.

of myshort storiesandarticlespublishedonlineon TheBomb Surf and Zig Zag’s websites.Ihave also
had three storiespublishedin Urban EdgeMagazineandafew others on their website. These short
storiesare ina portfolio,alongwithsamplesof myotherpublishedworks,whichIwill gladlyforward
to you on request. Creative writing is something I missed tremendously and I have therefore
restarted, though nothing is quite ready for publication at this point in time.
Copy Editing: RioNet (2010), I assisted RioNet in the copy editing and proof-reading of their
promotional material forthe new RealSencemunicipalandhouseholdutilitymonitoringsystem. The
task involved streamlining the documents and simplifying the technical information to make the
system understandable to a layman.
Teaching: Stellenbosch University (2009 - 2012), as a postgraduate studentinthe Englishdepartment
at Stellenbosch University I was offered the opportunity to teach English first year tutorial classes.
Unlike most other departments the English tutors are required to actively teach almost 50% of the
syllabus. As a tutorial teacher I was responsible for classes of 13 to 19 students who met twice a
week. In those small group classes I was required to teach academic writing skills, short stories,
poetry,novelsandplays,overthe course of the year.I wasalso responsible formarkingthe students
in my class’s essays and assignments.
