Editor's Notes
1.1
I want to play a part of clip that you might be surprised why I’m showing it exactly to you, and showing it today. But there we go!
(play the clip, ideally from 1:55 when the song really begins)
Ask the crowd:
- who knows that movie?
- what kind of teachers are there?
- what kind of education we see there?
(if nobody answers, say - it’s a movie which shows an opposite picture of what I want to talk with you about today.
- Rigid teachers
- oppressed students
- Does it look easy for someone here to break out of the system? To do something else?
when you want to break out of this system, you’re alone.
“We don’t need no education” - we dont’ need it in the traditional context. Nobody needs it!
***The world doesn’t teachers from the Wall movie. We need educators who let the students have wings, not chains!)
Ask:
- Now, is THIS how we want our education?!
(Nooooo…..)
1.3
But how to get there?
People in Google believe that it’s possible to get there,to break down the wall.
We know technology can play a crucial role in this.
We also know that many many of you teachers feel the same.
And we know the solution is here by connecting the teachers among themselves, with technology, and let them live the passion for change together.
As educators, we need to get connected and start that revolution!
#2 - the pitch
To make this journey happen, Google supports creation of a platform where teachers can meet and start breaking the walls together by getting connected. This platform is called GEG. What is GEG? (read the definition).
GEGs are independently run communities of educators who inspire and empower each other to meet the needs of students through technology, both in the classroom and beyond. Via face to face meetups and online activities, GEGs provide a way for primary or secondary school educators who are passionate about education and technology to meet like minded people and share, and learn and collaborate together with them.
2 - the pitch
You see, it’s all the keywords connected together, such as Community and Educators. Empowerement via Technology. Meetups and Online Collaboration. (make your own).
Combinations of these word is what GEG is, not “a definition”. Why? Because GEG is about people like you BY people like you and I want you to invite to take a part in this. Google is just a partner and prime inspiration. GEG is about you, not about us. But more about that later.
Community, Educators, Inspiration, Collaboration, Sharing, Empowerement, Technology, Students, Classroom, Outside, Meetups, Online, Like-minded, Creativity, Curiosity
3- the problem
Although each GEG may choose their own unique activites, and their own particular focuses, we’re all working towards teh same ultimate goals and all dealing with similar circumstances.
Let’s recognize the new generation we’re dealing with and the new opportunitiies which will actually help us in breaking down the wall and making this shift. We’re all living in a world where we are living in a world where people in not just america but all countries are hooked to their cell phones and are many times invested in not just one but several devices. This video really says it all.
We are exposed to an environment where students WANT to use technology … but reality is...
- students not using the full power of technology
- teacher might not be aware how to use tech for students and beyond class
- teachers not having inspiration where to learn
- innovative techers feeling isolated
4.1- the solution - activities
“Teachers inspiring one another with a support by partners. Therefore, GEG is mostly a way to meet and do things together - learn from one another or an expert, meet other like minded people, find how the teacher around the block or around the country is doing what I want to do using technology”.
So when we look at what GEG is actually doing, it’s meetups, both online and offline. We call this a “community”, because these meetups are called for, organized and designed by teachers themselves, who take a role of GEG leaders. GEG itself is organized into chapters, envisioned and organized by the teachers themselves. Google wants to support this community of volunteers. [ UPDATE]
GIVE EXAMLPES HERE OF some example activites
4.2- the solution - community
What I want to stress is what we call the “community factor”.
ASK - how do you understand the word “community”? (highlight answers which use words such as collaboration, bottom-up, no bosses, volunteers, connections, sharing, learning). Exactly - GEG is about teachers who themselves decide to do something for other teachers, of just participate on some of such events. But it’s all bottom-up.
Just take the example of our logo to illustrate the free and organic nature of GEG organization - ASK: do you like it? (hopefully Yeeaah! If mild response, say ‘Well you might like it a bit more when I tell you the story of it’) Now let me tell you the story of it as it illustrates the principles behind GEG. Google designers tried to come up with a logo, but the outcome didn’t have the heart of it. Then we found there was a Czech teacher who already runs a pilot GEG group in Europe. She needed a logo so she created one in 10 minutes, not being a designer. All other teachers liked it. And see, even Google liked it better than the designer-professional design, the Google designers just made it follow some professional design principles. This illustrates the fact that GEG ideas and activities come from the bottom AND Google helps make them happen.
So we’re discussing this on a Google organized event, GEG has Google in its name and Google will support GEG’s. Does that mean Google owns, manages or control GEG? Absolutely not. Google only supports that.
Now, you might find this paradoxical. Google is a for profit company, after all, so why would they do this? The reason is simple: Google’s mission in education is promote the use of open technology to improve learning for everyone, everywhere and the way that GEG is being created, it shares a very similar mission. It makes sense for Google to help it!
Second, Google believes that change comes from people, not from corporations or even governments. Therefore, any change in something is important as education must come from the very people who are involved by it most - the educators. It must be the educators who decide about what’s best and how to use it, not any company. That’s the reason why Google actually does not want to be organizer or owner of any GEG activities or events, all this must come from the people in the field so that it makes sense.
Said that, Google is a proud partner and inspiration for GEGs and will be providing support to some groups to get them started and that support may come in various forms.

7. Other Google Education Programs and how they fit into GEG
Google Teacher Academy -
- [on slide]
- Google Teacher Acadmey: A professional development experience designed to help educators from around the globe get the most from innovative Google technologie:
- Google Certified Teachers: Alumni of Google Teacher Academies. Outstanding educators with a passion for using innovative technologies and approaches to improve teaching and learning.
- [talking points] The GTA is a free professional development experience designed to help primary and secondary educators from around the globe get the most from innovative technologies.
This is a two-day event during which participants get hands-on experience with Google tools, learn about innovative instructional strategies, receive resources to share with colleagues, and immerse themselves in a supportive community of educators making impact.
- GTA graduates become Google Certified teachers. Once a google certified teacher, these educators are seen as the top educators in our communities who are making the biggest impact by running professional development opportunities for other educators pasionate about technology, or helping schools around them transform to using Google Apps or other Google technologies. GCTs receive a badge of recognition to place on their blog and are offerred to help give feedback on Google edcuation tools and their development. They also are expected to complete a personal project which they define during the Google Teacher Academy.
- Althought we don’t expect all GEG organizers to become Google Certifed Teachers it’s something we hope organizers strive to become and we encourage them to apply to the Google Teacher Academies if they feel they are ready. We will also however have another certification opportunity availible and encouraged for all organizers to take before the end of the year.

5. plan to start
We know this is all about a revolution, but even that starts with small steps. We’re currently offering support only in very few places in the world and i’m delighted to say that XXXX is one of them. We’re very special here! What we want to help happen in our country now is
GEG needs leaders to create new chapters to run first events and enable first connections among teachers
- creating a few starting chapters
- help them get organizers
- help them start first activities
- to get first attendees and members
6.2 pitch to organizers - requirements
Now let’s be more specific.
Whom GEG needs among organizers? Not necessarily superskills, but quite important
- people like you - who are passionate about education and technology, willing to learn, and willing to help other people learn
- people who like to connect with others and help them make connections
- people who have some big picture of education in their minds and are not afraid of the thought that it might actually happen!
- people who are willing to dedicate a few hours a week for GEG - most of what GEG organizers do is envisioning activities for others, planning them and eventually running
- people who are willing to work with others - a part of GEG activities is also working with the internal organizer community
- people willing to utilize G+ to the max
- and people willing to grow professionally
6.3 pitch to organizers - benefits
What do you get?
The bad news: This is not a paid job.
The good news: This is not a paid job.
Actually, some of our teachers already involved in GEG think this is a good news. You’re not employed by anyone, don’t have a boss… there’s a ton of freedom of what you can do. You can realize your dreams!
But still, there are many non-financial benefits you can get
- breaking the walls of isolation
- meeting likeminded people and getting more powerful thanks to these connectsion
- getting recognition in your local community and nationally as someone who’s a leader in the field of technology and education
- having Google as a partner and basically getting much closer to Google than people outside of GEG
- learning about networking, event management, new technologies, community management
- and more
