Education and Values
4 Values are individual beliefs that motivate people to

human behavior. Some values have intrinsic worth,
such as love, truth, and freedom. Other values, such as
ambition, responsibility, and courage, describe traits or
behaviors that are instrumental as means to an end
4 Values Education is an essential element of whole-

actually wants”

Importance of value education
4 It gives the students a progressive way for their future and also helps
them to know the real purpose of their life.
4 This makes it clear to them, the best way to live a life that can be helpful
to individuals as well as people around.
4 Value education helps students to become more responsive and practical.
4 This helps them to better recognize the perception of life and lead a
positive life as a responsible resident.
4 It also helps in developing a strong relationship with family and friends.
4 It changes the personality and character of the students.
4 Value education changes a positive opinion about life in the student’s
mind.
4 Values education is teaching and learning about the ideals that society
considers important.
4 The objective of the students is not only to recognize the values but also
to reflect them in their behaviour and attitudes.
Role of Value Education in
Contemporary Society
4 Values reflect our sense of right and wrong. They
help us grow and develop. They help us create the
future we want. The decisions we make every day
are a reflection of our values.
4 Values education makes us aware of the
consequences of our actions on the planet and
instils in us a respect for nature. We need to
minimise health risks by encouraging the right
attitudes and tackling health education from a
dynamic, personal and collective point of view.
4 Value education helps in building and
strengthening of positive sentiments for people
and ideals.
4 It should prepare individuals for active
participation in social life and acceptance of social
rules.
4 Value education has to be included in various
aspects of education.
4 Attention needs to be pay by higher authorities to
spread the importance of value education in
society.
4 The present paper will focus on Role of Value
Education in Contemporary Society.
Role of education in transformation
of values in society
4 Education transforms both societies and people in
a particular direction by shaping and reshaping
their patterns of thoughts, means of problem
solving and ways of life. This will then contribute to
further individual and social transformation.
4 Education changes the outlook and the tradition
approach towards social and economic problems.
It sharpens the skills and knowledge of the children.
Education not only preserves the cultural traditions
i.e., customs, traditions and values etc. of the society
but also transmits them to the next generation.
ROLE OF PARENTS, TEACHERS, SOCIETY,
PEER GROUP AND MASS MEDIA IN
FOSTERING VALUES
4 Family and school are very important factors in pupils
moral conduct formation. The role of this partnership
becomes moreover a priority and a necessity. Family is
the most important element as proximity and importance in
developing a good personality, and also a physical,
emotional, material safety of the child.
4 School, teachers and parents play vital role in holistic
development of the child. Parents are the first mentor of the
child and the teacher is the second. Teachers are a role-
model for the students. Their actions convey more than
their words. Students learn values from what the teachers are
rather than from what they say. Teacher makes a maximum
impact on the personality of a student in the formative years.
4 It's natural for people to identify with and compare
themselves to their peers as they consider how they wish to
be (or think they should be), or what they want to achieve.
People are influenced by peers because they want to fit in,
be like peers they admire, do what others are doing, or
have what others have.
4 Parents and friends generally play a role in shaping the
behavior and beliefs of an individual—through parent
expectations or peer pressure. ... Therefore, the people who
tend to become the greatest influencers in our lives tend to be
those closest to us—our friends and family.
4 The media have an important role in shaping social
consciousness. The media influence our perception of the
world and thus the value structure that we create. The
audience is confronted with a world of real and invented
events, stories and finally values that belong to the space and
time that do not concern it.
Approaches to teaching value
Education
4 Broadly there are two approaches to
teaching value Education
1. Integrated approach and
2. Curricular Approach.
4 Integrated approach: is also known as indirect method. This is
adopted by many public schools. In this approach, values are
integrated and taught through various subjects and activities. For
example, physical education imparts values of health, strength, agility,
grace etc.
4 Sports teach the values of courage, initiative, rapid decision, action,
perseverance, leadership, self control, acceptance of failure and
victory.
4 Work Experience: Manual skills, utilizing materials, avoiding
wastage, creativity, live in harmony with nature, appreciating art and
music
4 Social studies: lives of great men will instruct on courage, patriotism,
citizenship, civic sense, hard work, diligence etc.
4 It also makes use of leisure periods, reading books on values, by
organizing discussions and debate by eminent scholars,
4 Further it is expected use the incidental method of relating the life of
students to various events that take place in the surrounding.
4 Further it depends on the morning assembly, celebration of festivals
and other occasions to impart values.
Curricular approach
4 It is also known as the direct method or
formal method.
4 It is adopted by many private schools. In
this approach, text books are identified for
various levels for teaching the values.
4 It is carried out by teachers through
specified number of periods and specified
syllabus.
Inculcate values through curricular
and co-curricular activities
4 Incorporating Values through the
