4 Values are individual beliefs that motivate people to
act one way or another. They serve as a guide for
human behavior. Some values have intrinsic worth,
such as love, truth, and freedom. Other values, such as
ambition, responsibility, and courage, describe traits or
behaviors that are instrumental as means to an end
4 Values Education is an essential element of whole-
person education which aims at fostering students'
positive values and attitudes through the learning and
teaching of various Key Learning Areas/subjects and
the provision of relevant learning experiences.
3. VALUES - DEFINITION
4 According to Perry (1968), “Value means the
relation of an object to a valuing subject.”
4 According to Hindzay (1966), “ By values we mean
a person’s idea of what is desirable, what he
actually wants”
4 In the words of John Dewey (1966), “Value
education means primarily to prize to esteem to
appraise, holding it dear and also the act of passing
judgment upon the nature and amount of its value as
compared with something else”.

of increasing values in the mind of people.

7. Classification of value education
4 Personal Values: Personal values mean whatever a person
needs in a social relationship.Some of the personal values are
beauty, morality, confidence, self-motivation, regularity,
ambition, courage, vision, imagination etc.
4 Social Values: A person cannot live in the world without
communicating with others.People want social values like love,
affection, friendship, noble groups, reference groups, impurity,
hospitality, bravery, service, justice, freedom, patience,
forgiveness, coordination, sympathy, tolerance, etc.Social
values are more important for a healthy and good environment
for every organization.
4 Moral Values: Ethical values, value others and themselves
respect the authority of others, keep promises, avoid
unnecessary problems with others, avoid cheating and
dishonesty, thanking others and making them work Encourage.
8. 4 Spiritual values: The ultimate moral value is called spiritual
value. Spiritual values are purity, meditation, yoga, discipline,
control, clarity and devotion to God, etc.Spiritual value
education highlights the principles of self-discipline. Self-
discipline satisfaction, lack of needs, general greed and
freedom from seriousness.
4 Universal Values: It is universal values that specify the sense
of the human condition. It is through universal values that we
associate ourselves with humanity and the universe.Universal
values can be experienced as life, joy, brotherhood, love,
sympathy, service, heaven, truth and eternity.
4 Cultural Values: Cultural values are concerned with right
and wrong, good and bad, customs and behaviour.Cultural
values are reflected in language, ethics, social hierarchy,
aesthetics, education, law, economics, philosophy and social
organizations of all kinds.

moral conduct formation. The role of this partnership
becomes moreover a priority and a necessity. Family is
the most important element as proximity and importance in
developing a good personality, and also a physical,
emotional, material safety of the child.

development of the child. Parents are the first mentor of the
child and the teacher is the second. Teachers are a role-
model for the students. Their actions convey more than
their words. Students learn values from what the teachers are
rather than from what they say. Teacher makes a maximum
impact on the personality of a student in the formative years.

themselves to their peers as they consider how they wish to
be (or think they should be), or what they want to achieve.
People are influenced by peers because they want to fit in,
be like peers they admire, do what others are doing, or
have what others have.

behavior and beliefs of an individual—through parent
expectations or peer pressure. ... Therefore, the people who
tend to become the greatest influencers in our lives tend to be

world and thus the value structure that we create. The
audience is confronted with a world of real and invented
events, stories and finally values that belong to the space and
time that do not concern it.
16. Approaches to teaching value
Education
4 Broadly there are two approaches to
teaching value Education
1. Integrated approach and
2. Curricular Approach.
17. 4 Integrated approach: is also known as indirect method. This is
adopted by many public schools. In this approach, values are
integrated and taught through various subjects and activities. For
example, physical education imparts values of health, strength, agility,
grace etc.
4 Sports teach the values of courage, initiative, rapid decision, action,
perseverance, leadership, self control, acceptance of failure and
victory.
4 Work Experience: Manual skills, utilizing materials, avoiding
wastage, creativity, live in harmony with nature, appreciating art and
music
4 Social studies: lives of great men will instruct on courage, patriotism,
citizenship, civic sense, hard work, diligence etc.

organizing discussions and debate by eminent scholars,
