Overview of “Internet Of Things”
“Internet Of Things” (IOT) refers to a world where there are different ‘everyday’ devices
(besides computers) that are connected (or are going to be connected) to the internet. The
possibility of “Internet Of Things” has developed with the convergence of multiple technologies
like wireless networks, embedded systems, RFIDs, NFC, Barcodes and home & building
automation. These devices can be anything from a refrigerator, television set and smart phones
to healthcare devices or cars or animals.
In future, we will have things which will be internet smart or simply smart devices and which
will be part of the internet, sending and receiving data over networks. Once we have devices
throwing various kinds of data on internet, it is going to seriously revolutionize the automation
in various fields.
For example, a web connected tennis racket uses sensors in that racket itself to determine your
swing and while you keep hitting the ball off the court. Some household items are already web
connected, i.e. Samsung has the internet connected refrigerator, which tweets and shares the
latest news too. Eventually, all these object work together to create a smart home.
Just imagine, you have a tyre with low air pressure and sensors on your car trigger to check
your calendar to fix the appointment with the local garage to fix that. Then, an email sent is
pushed to you asking if the appointment time was okay. This is going to be the amazing world of
Internet of Things. Users would only be limited by their imagination about how life will pan out
with IOT. Already, a lot is being revolutionized with regards to mobile phones (and other mobile
devices) connecting to internet.
And then again, a lot is happening when it comes to vehicles tracking systems (VTS). Almost all
fleet owners don’t think they can survive without a VTS in place, which enables them to have
critical information about their vehicles to the minutest details like fuel consumption, ignition
on-off status, idling time, start-stop time, door opening time, AC on-off detail. There are alerts
shooting through emails or SMSs and one could even immobilize a vehicle from a remote
location. All this is an example of how data transfer from these devices could transform life.
Now, expand your imagination and take it to a city which may throw up real-time data on
various utilities being made available on click of a button. The concept of smart building, smart
city are not very far away.
However, there are some challenges in having a fully connected life and the experts don’t really
think that internet of things is going to take off very soon. There are bound to be concerns with
regards to security and privacy of so much data being made available online.
We invite readers to comment and throw up more possibilities on how such a technology will
transform lives.
