IT IS A POEM IN ENGLISH ABOUT THE STORY OF DISCOVERY OF DNA STRUCTURE AND ITS ROLE IN ORGANISMS AS BLUE PRINT OF LIFE .& IN HEREDITY & VARIATION .

DNA
Oh ! what a day it was for England
Oh! what a day it was for the world
What a day indeed for the whole mankind
A day calling for celebration of life
When two young men walked in
in the afternoon of that day in1953
in the Eagle pub *of Cambridge city
and announced quite solemnly
That they have discovered
“ The secret of Life ”
leaving the mouth agape
of everyone in sight
Now famous Crick and Watson
noble laureate were the gentlemen
who had that day, in February ,as it dawned,
succeeded at long last

In realizing the helical form
of the molecule of DNA
and making 3D model of
its structure in all its details
By deciphering the diffraction image
visible clearly in photograph 51
obtained by X ray crystallography
by Rosalind - their rival in the race
Watson’s mouth was agape & ajar
when he saw the photograph
pinched by Wilkins quietly
and shown to him clandestinely
Watson and Cricks feat ,however,
lay in showing correctly
that DNA molecule was a double helix
of two intertwining strands

of sugar-phosphate bands
held together by bonds
of 4 bases ATC&G on inner side
and by phosphate group on outer side
The whole molecule looked like
a twisted or spiral stair case
with the bonded base pairs looking like
rungs as steps of that stair case
It did not escape their notice
that the proposed structure also fitted
the function of replication , required
during cell division and reproduction
DNA is actually Deoxyribose nucleic acid
discovered much earlier and found
to be , a polymer made of repeating units
of nucleotide monomers in all forms of life
In eukaryotes it resides merrily
in the nucleus of each& every cell
directing the activities of the cell
as per the genetic code inscribed

That DNA was the genetic material
and genes were the basic units of heredity
having already been established
importance of it all could be easily realized
And soon led to the cracking of
the universal genetic code carried by DNA
and the realization that the 4 bases were
responsible for the all the variety of life on earth.
These discoveries changed
the world of science and medicine
for all time to come, by showing how
heredity works and variations arise
Soon it was also worked out
how DNA gives rise to RNA
and through them the proteins
proving them to be blue prints of life

ultimately responsible for all
the processes in all stages of life
development ,function & reproduction
and characteristics of species one & all
playing important role in Nature
in health , disease or aberrations
of individuals of all species
from the very beginning of life .
Thus this unique long molecule
is the very basis of all life
seen in supercoiled form in the
chromosomes of us all.
