3. Introduction
• Dressings and bandages are use to cover
wounds, apply pressure, control haemorrhage
and provide support.
• It is done to assess the wound and to exclude
disease process
4. Principles of the dressing
• Bandage should only be applied after application
of dressing gauze
• Bandage should be applied firmly and secured
• It should not be too tight to stop circulation
• It should not be applied so loose as to allow
dressing to slip
• When a roller bandage is applied, hold with the
right hand so the loose end is on the bottom
• Bandages are mostly made of gauze and or muslin

• Clean op site
• Cover it
• Remove drapes
• Ensure patient is completely dry
• Assemble all needed materials
7. The procedure
• Apply the first layer of gauze with Povidone iodine if
applicable then 4-7 layers of gauze
• Begin application with the circular winding around
the hip of the crepe or gauze bandage
• Central over the mons pubis, towards the base of the
penis;
• Apply with just enough tension to conform with the
anatomy
• You may wish to cut or continue with the coconut
dressing /scrotal sling
• Proceed with bandage winding distally
• Bring the bandage under the scrotum

• Continue winding in an upward direction
• Attaching it to the circular winding around the hip
laterally at both sides
• Continue winding to cover all exposed area of the
scrotal dressing. Molding the material to conform
• If using a continuous process, make a cross shape
cut on the bandage to accommodate the penis
before winding the crape.
• And trim the bandage as needed towards the
base of the penis
• Bandage turns should overlap

• When using a stockinet, create a hole to
accommodate the penis, after the first layer
application, twist the stockinet twice then apply
the other end to the scrotum
• Firm dressing may also be applied and the
jockstrap used
• Make patient comfortable after the procedure
