6. Modal verbs are used before ordinary verbs and
express meanings such as permission, possibility,
certainty and necessity. These modal verbs are
termed as “Defective Verbs” because some parts are
wanting in them. I shall make a cake for you.
There are two important things to remember in using
modal verbs. She could eat biryani.
1: We do not add “s” to modals even though the
subject is singular and it does not have a past form
“ can” is always can. “Must” is always must.

7. 2. They can not stand alone in a sentence,
so it is always followed by the base form of
the main verb (without to).
Example: He can finish his homework
before midnight. I can call to talk with you.
• Can is the modal and finish is the main
verb. If you noticed, we have used the
base form finish. But we do not say:
