BACKGROUND OF THE ORGANIZATION
In 2013, prior to my graduation, I sensed the need for my nation – Liberia – to have teachers who
are trained with the requisite knowledge and skills for quality teaching in order to help improve
the nation-building process. This need arose due to the overwhelming challenge of Liberia
having quality teachers especially in the rural areas. In the rural areas, there are teachers who
have no or minimum training in the field of teaching but are teaching because of the ominous
situation of very limited teaching staff and densely populated rural communities. Liberia is a
nation with 4 million people. Of this population, 1/3 lives in the capital Monrovia. It is a nation
that was heavily affected by civil crisis for 15 years. This has led to brain drain heavily in the
education sector. Quality teachers who were teaching before the civil crisis were either killed
during the civil crisis or traveled abroad with the thought of never returning or are very old to
remain in the teaching field.
The 2/3 of the population who lives around Monrovia and in the rural areas of Liberia are
challenged in achieving quality education due to the below factors:
1. Untrained teachers
2. Unqualified teachers
3. Lack of technological equipment
4. Low salary for teachers
 UNTRAINED TEACHERS
Untrained teachers are those teachers who are teaching and fall in one or both of these
categories – senior secondary education or education in a specific discipline. For the
latter, this is an example: If a person is a biologist by profession, s/he can be called to
teach biology in the senior high division of a school. The problem with this is that the
person might have the head knowledge but does not have the skills for teaching. Hence,
s/he might not be able to deliver as expected by the institution and the learners.
Primarily, around Monrovia are teachers who are in one or both of the above categories.
This is also applicable in rural Liberia. But having senior secondary education does not
equip anyone to be called a teacher neither does a person being an expert in a particular
area of knowledge enables him or her to be a teacher. Teaching is a unique profession
that goes along with overwhelming challenges. As a result, one must be trained to the
ethics, professionalism and requisite knowledge and skills in carrying the task of
imparting knowledge, skills and character building in an individual.
 UNQUALIFIED TEACHERS
These are teachers who have not completed junior or senior secondary education but due
to the dire need for teaching others who have not reached their education status, they
decide to teach. These are teachers who do not have the opportunity to advance beyond
what is afforded them in their respective surroundings. These are teachers who do not
have the opportunity to higher education more than senior secondary education. On the
other hand, if they do have, the division of senior secondary education might be
challenged with the rightfully trained teachers. Some might have only one senior
secondary school in an entire county like Rivercess as stipulated in the Education Reform
Act of 2012. These teachers are mainly found in the rural areas of Liberia. In rural
Liberia, there are cases where someone with 12th grade education in a subject like physics
will be teaching a class of 12th graders physics. There are instances where a person with
9th grade knowledge in English will be teaching a class of 9th graders English.
Due to un-qualification, the person teaching has limited information. This is because s/he
will be teaching from the notes s/he received in class. S/He is not opportune to advance
his or her knowledge due to lack of access to library(ies) and shortages of books in rural
Liberia.
 LACK OF TECHNOLOGY EQUIPMENTS
As a third world nation, Liberia’s challenge is enormous. But there is still hope that we
can rise above the present status-quo.
Education in the 21st century cannot do without technology. However, there are schools
in Monrovia – the capital – also with the challenge of owning a computer lab to assist in
the teaching-learning process. The rural Liberia is also facing this enormous challenge.
Schools in rural Liberia are not opportune and some might not be opportune to have an
access to technology in the teaching-learning process if someone does not stand up to
help now. Therefore, ETTT has decided to help by bridging this gap of technology to the
rural areas of Liberia.
 LOW SALARY FOR TEACHERS
Majority of those teaching complained that they are not being paid well or salaries are not
arriving on time. This is why most of them do not want to go in the rural areas to teach.
As a result, the limited trained teachers stay in the city and we face the problem of
challenge #2 – unqualified teachers – in rural Liberia.
The training that will be given these teachers will become meaningless if they are not
paid well or trained to maintain themselves in rural Liberia. Thus, at the heart of ETTT is
to see our teachers put effectively in to practice what they’ve been trained. Therefore,
ETTT will love to partner with the Government of Liberia, organizations and institutions
in helping maintain these teachers fully by giving them good salary to maintain they and
their families and also training in other areas so that they do not only depend on salary.
Hence, the burning need for a nation that has been ruined by civil crisis that affected every sector
of the economy especially education which is the major building block of the society, can never
be underestimated or treated with little attention. This is a need that even the Government of
Liberia cannot address singly.
Therefore, Equipping Teachers to Transform Teaching (ETTT) has come at such a time to assist
in helping reduce the illiteracy rate and train teachers who will develop students become people
with holistic transformed character for the marketplace and workforce. ETTT has seen this need
to primarily help train teachers who have no or minimum knowledge in the field of education.
However, we will also offer consultancy for those trained teachers who lack some of the training
advantages that will be offered for our clients.
The name of this organization shall be called:
EQUIPPING TEACHERS to TRANSFORM TEACHING
The logo of ETTT is in the shape of a circle which represents the unending training of teachers in
Liberia. Within this circle are the below listed items:
1. Key – This key opens the door to professionalism, integrity and loyalty to the
teaching-learning service.
2. Star – This star represents ETTT trained teachers of transformation after receiving
the training. (Philippians 2)
3. Map of Liberia – This represents the country of birth. At the heart of EQUIP is
the Republic of Liberia (education system).
4. Human beings (males & females holding hands) - This represents a sign of unity
and continuous support to enhancing the education system of Liberia and the
global village.
5. Cross – This represents the Light and Voice of Truth (GOD) who is at the
pinnacle and epicenter of everything that EQUIP does in the process of restoring
Liberia’s education system.

vii. Produce trained teachers who will have positive impact on their learners, in their
workplace and the larger society including their homes.
viii. Produce trained teachers who will become lifelong learners and develop lifelong learners
OBJECTIVES:
The below listed points serves as the paramount aims and objectives of ETTT:
I. Prepare teachers to use the Bible as the foundational book for every subject/course.
II. Prepare teachers to critique every literature used in the teaching-learning process in order
to properly reconstruct a theocentric perspective of the critiqued literature.
III. Equip teachers to depend on the Triune God as the source of all truths and knowledge.
IV. Engage in training teachers from elementary – senior high.
V. Prepare and encourage teachers to educate students who will be able to meet international
standards.
VI. Equip teachers to properly assess/evaluate students during their lessons.
VII. Train teachers to become creative in their lesson presentation and the teaching-learning
process.
VIII. Promote and maintain high standards of professionalism and integrity in the teaching-
learning process.
IX. Equip teachers to properly assessed and analyze themselves and their students
before/during/after school hours.
X. Equip teachers to implement 21st century teaching strategies during class period.
XI. Encourage teachers to engage students into critical thinking skills and problem-solving.
XII. Equip teachers to properly assess and evaluate holistic character transformation of
themselves and their learners
WHERE WE WORK: ETTT will work in the fifteen (15) counties of Liberia. We will start
with Montserrado, Bong, & Grand Bassa Counties as our pilot program. However, the focus of
ETET will be in rural Liberia.
WHY RURAL LIBERIA:
Majority of those teaching in rural Liberia are half-educated (junior high students, high school
dropout) to become teachers. They lack the requisite teaching requirements. Research has proven
that some of these teachers do not have the finance to further their studies. In addition, those who
have the finance have to go miles to acquire a minimum of “C” certificate for teaching. Some
have to leave from counties like Grand Gedeh, Rivergee and Sinoe to attend training institutes
like Kakata Rural Teachers Training Institute (KRTTI) in Kakata, Margibi, Zorzor Rural
Teachers Training Institute (ZRTTI) in Lofa County or LICOSES. With the shortage of the
teachers training institute, ETET will be able to train teachers to acquire similar knowledge
(education) they will get when enrolled at one of these institute.
HOW WILL IT BE DONE: ETTT as an organization anticipates starting by having training
sessions on schools campuses based on the population of teachers in the schools zones.
Afterwards, we anticipate having bi-annual trainings for teachers. Due to the enormous
challenges in the rural areas, ETTT also anticipates having mobile training sessions primarily in
rural Liberia.
Consequently, we will do training through the following means:
i. Teacher trainings and workshops
a. Mobile
b. In-service
ii. Leadership development activities
iii. Bible study methods
AREAS FOR TRAINING: Due to the effects on the Liberian education system, ETTT will
train teachers in the following areas to help them produce problem solvers and more productive
citizens. Training will be done in:
1. Classroom Organization/Management
2. Classroom Assessment & Evaluation
3. Educational Psychology
4. Methods of Teaching (Lesson Planning)
5. Teaching the Poor Kids
CORE VALUES:
At ETET we value the following as the core of becoming an effective teacher:
 Prayer
 Professionalism
 Integrity
 Honesty
 Hardwork
 Discipline
 Commitment
ADVANTAGES OF ETTT:
 21st century teaching material/manuals
 Recent/up-to-date teaching practices
 Observation of teachers trained after workshop
 Routine Assessment & Evaluation of our trained teachers
 Holistic Character Transformation
EDUCATIONAL PHILOSOPHY:
I. ETTT believes that the Triune GOD is the source of all truths in the teaching-learning
process.
II. We believe that Jesus is the Master Teacher and from him every teacher gleans his/her
teaching methods.
III. We believe that the Holy Spirit is the “unseen catalyst” in the teaching-learning process.
IV. We believe that the Bible is the foundation for every subject/course that is to be taught in
the teaching-learning process.
V. ETTT believes that the process of education involves everyone, but primarily the parents
and teachers (Deuteronomy 6:4-9).
VI. We believe that teachers are to guide/facilitate the learning process. They are to educate
students to do the right thing and be obedient (Deuteronomy 11:1-22).
VII. We believe that education does not end in the classroom; it is a lifelong process
(Deuteronomy 6:7-9) and ends when we leave the face of earth.
VIII. We believe that in holistic education. This means that teachers are to assess their
character growth and teach the process of character transformation.
IX. We believe that teaching is a spiritual gift (Eph. 4:11-13) but can be developed when you
are passionate about it.
X. Therefore, we hold to the truth that God commanded us through His son Jesus in His
word to teach.
XI. We believe that students are able to become positive agents of change.
XII. We believe that teachers are primary means of making students positive and productive
citizens.
XIII. We believe that students are also paramount means making themselves productive
citizens but this is only done by having guidance and facilitator during the process.
XIV. We believe that learning can only be discovered and not created. God has created
everything we need to learn.
XV. We believe that education involves a routine assessment and evaluation of the teaching-
learning process and the development of character.
XVI. We believe that true wisdom that comes from God can be learned by submitting to the
will of the Holy Spirit.
XVII. We believe that true wisdom is best seen when we honestly live it in our relationships
with ourselves, others and nature.

For the latter, this is an example: If a person is a biologist by profession, s/he can be called to teach biology in the senior high division of a school. The problem with this is that the person might have the head knowledge but does not have the skills for teaching. Hence, s/he might not be able to deliver as expected by the institution and the learners. Primarily, around Monrovia are teachers who are in one or both of the above categories. Therefore, ETTT has decided to help by bridging this gap of technology to the rural areas of Liberia.  LOW SALARY FOR TEACHERS Majority of those teaching complained that they are not being paid well or salaries are not arriving on time. This is why most of them do not want to go in the rural areas to teach. As a result, the limited trained teachers stay in the city and we face the problem of challenge #2 – unqualified teachers – in rural Liberia. The training that will be given these teachers will become meaningless if they are not paid well or trained to maintain themselves in rural Liberia. Thus, at the heart of ETTT is to see our teachers put effectively in to practice what they’ve been trained. Therefore, ETTT will love to partner with the Government of Liberia, organizations and institutions in helping maintain these teachers fully by giving them good salary to maintain they and their families and also training in other areas so that they do not only depend on salary. Hence, the burning need for a nation that has been ruined by civil crisis that affected every sector of the economy especially education which is the major building block of the society, can never be underestimated or treated with little attention. This is a need that even the Government of Liberia cannot address singly.

WHY RURAL LIBERIA: Majority of those teaching in rural Liberia are half-educated (junior high students, high school dropout) to become teachers. They lack the requisite teaching requirements. Research has proven that some of these teachers do not have the finance to further their studies. In addition, those who have the finance have to go miles to acquire a minimum of “C” certificate for teaching. Some have to leave from counties like Grand Gedeh, Rivergee and Sinoe to attend training institutes like Kakata Rural Teachers Training Institute (KRTTI) in Kakata, Margibi, Zorzor Rural

They are to educate students to do the right thing and be obedient (Deuteronomy 11:1-22). VII. We believe that education does not end in the classroom; it is a lifelong process (Deuteronomy 6:7-9) and ends when we leave the face of earth. VIII. We believe that in holistic education.
