Sowohl an den Hochschulen als auch in der Industrie haben sich die Rahmenbedingungen, unter denen geforscht wird, in den vergangenen 20 Jahren grundlegend verändert. So muss die Wissenschaft mehr denn je Praxisrelevanz beweisen, was zu einem immer schärferen Wettbewerb um Drittmittel, öffentliche Förderung und somit auch internationale Aufmerksamkeit führt. Wer in diesem Wettbewerb langfristig bestehen will, muss verstehen, wie Unternehmen heute innovieren. Noch sehen sich die meisten Hochschulen (aber auch viele außeruniversitäre Forschungseinrichtungen) hauptsächlich als gelegentlicher Projektpartner der Wirtschaft – sozusagen als „wissenschaftlicher Problemlöser“.
