The deep cervical fascia of the neck is condensed to form the
following 06 layers:
1. Investing layer
2. Pretracheal fascia
3. Prevertebral fascia
4. Carotid sheath
5. Buccopharyngeal fascia
6. Pharyngobasilar fascia

6. 1- INVESTING LAYER
Attachments
Superiorly:
• External occipital protuberance
• Superior nuchal lines
• Mastoid process, styloid process
• External acoustic meatus
• Base of the mandible

7. Clavicle
Manubrium
Spine of scapula
Acromion
process
Inferior attachment of investing layer

8. Anteriorly:
• Symphysis menti
• Hyoid bone
Posteriorly:
• Ligamentum nuchae
• Spine of 7th vertebrae

9. SUPRASTERNAL SPACE
Contents:
1. Sternal heads of sternocleidomastoid muscle
2. Jugular venous arch
3. Lymph node
4. Interclavicular ligament

10. SUPRACLAVICULAR SPACE
Contents:
1. External jugular vein
2. Supraclavicular nerves
3. Cutaneous vessels
4. Lymphatics

11. 2- PRE-TRACHEAL FASCIA
Attachments
Superiorly:
• Hyoid bone
• Thyroid cartilage
• Cricoid cartilage
Inferiorly:
• Blends with arch of aorta and fibrous
pericardium
Laterally:
• Carotid sheath
Pretracheal
fascia

14. 3- CAROTID SHEATH
Carotid sheath
Internal jugular vein

It is the condensation of fibro-areolar tissue around the main vessels of neck.
