SABRINA RAMROOP
Registrar, School Visits in CEA
Sabrina has recently hit the one year mark as a Harbourfront Centre employee and in her time here, she has
probably interacted with more children and youth than in her entire life so far! Sabrina first came on board last April
as the Outdoor Education Coordinator, providing administrative support with registrations, scheduling, venue
preparation and set up, as well as teaching Visual Arts and Urban Studies classes for this programme. When the
school year came to an end, she joined Camps as an Attendance Coordinator and Administrative Assistant,
responsible for campers’ attendance management and helping with inquiries and registrations. In November she
became the School Visits Registrar, a frontline role that sees her as the first point of contact for teachers curious
about our educational offerings and interested in booking a visit.
On a daily basis Sabrina oversees the registration process from beginning to end. Some of her primary tasks include
responding to inquiries, arranging bookings, collecting and processing deposits and payments, issuing receipts,
liaising between visiting teachers and other School Visits staff to obtain and deliver information on scheduling and
requirements for particular programmes. Additionally she also generates reports and statistics from Artifax and
Tessitura to be used as informative tools for analysis and planning.
Sabrina is a certified teacher, qualified to teach Kindergarten to Grade 6 curriculum. After obtaining a Bachelor of
Arts, Major in Law and Society and Minor in English from York University, she contemplated either going to law
school or pursing a degree in education. The latter won out and this decision took her to Queen’s University, where
she graduated with a Bachelor of Education. As part of one of her teaching practicums, she secured a grant to teach
in Uganda and this turned out to be an eye opening experience that she remembers with fondness. There she found
children eager to work hard, ready to learn and invested in doing well, a true teacher’s dream!
Sabrina cares about civil and human rights, social action, education and politics, especially in relation to youth. As
such, some of her past and current volunteer efforts reflect these interests. On a lighter note, colleagues who interact
with her on a regular basis can attest to Sabrina’s flare for style. She owns a collection of colourful and eye-catching
necklaces that complement her outfits and visually add to her friendly and professional demeanor.
MOST SATISFYING PART OF HER JOB
Being able to see students experience an out-of-the-
ordinary school day, as a result of their visit to our site.
Many of them have never been downtown or by the
waterfront, so seeing them take it all in is very
satisfying. I also feel blessed to work with an amazing
and very supportive group of colleagues! We really
work well as a team and we all share a passion for
providing the best possible educational experiences.
PASSIONS & INTERESTS
ƒ I am a huge basketball and Toronto Raptors fan
( go Raptors go!) and I like sports in general.
I volunteer with MLSE and a great perk that comes
with that is being able to see Toronto FC, Toronto
Maple Leafs, Argos and Raptors games for free!
ƒ I am a strong believer in youth engagement and
volunteer at Reach for the Rainbow, an
organization dedicated to the integration and
inclusion of children and youth with disabilities
through participation in community recreation
programs across Ontario.
ƒ I am super-enthusiastic about fishing. I immensely
enjoy this activity, usually in the company of my
dad. Whenever we go out fishing, we hope to
bring home some good catches for a delicious
family meal. For the past three years I have had
my eye on a purple fishing rod; now that I finally
have it, I can fish in style!
ƒ I am passionate about cake decorating. A few
years back, I took some courses for fun and as a
creative outlet. Since then, I have turned this
hobby into a small side business ( Royal Custom
Desserts). I welcome new orders and take great
pride in providing my customers with beautiful
cakes to enhance their special occasions.
WORDS OF WISDOM/LIFE MOTTO
“ Give someone a fish, they can eat for a day.
Teach someone how to fish, they can eat for a
lifetime.”
HEARTBITS x May 2016
PET PEEVES
- Being told what to do instead of being asked
- Having to constantly repeat myself
- People moving my things without my permission
HOW SHE WOULD DESCRIBE HERSELF
Words that would describe me well are friendly,
easy going, sarcastic, sassy and overly organized.
WHAT AN IDEAL DAY LOOKS LIKE
I would start my morning right with a nice, big
breakfast. With a good book in hand, I would then
head out for a day at the beach. On the agenda for
the evening would be fun with my friends,
attending a sporting event or checking out a
cultural or music festival.
3 WISHES SHE WOULD ASK A GENIE FOR
1. For the Toronto Raptors to win this year’s NBA
Championship
2. To own an island somewhere in the Caribbean
3. To have unlimited access to candy and chocolate
FUTURE GOALS
- Working in a teaching capacity for a Toronto or
GTA school board.
- Continuing to be involved and engaged with
youth in some aspect.
- More long term goals might see me attending law
school and owning my own bakery.
