Educate the Child, Engage the Family, Empower the Community
August 2016
Dear Devan,
Is it just us or did the summer fly by? No different from years
past, the Peter Paul Summer Promise Program was a
whirlwind of fun, activity, and learning. Students were in and
out, as teachers filled the days with academics, hands-on
learning, and field trips. We couldn't have done it without so
many incredible volunteers, partners, and staff. This issue
touches on just a few of the amazing things that happened
this summer. Enjoy!
The 4th Annual East End Field Day!
An Event by the Community for the Community
It has been four years since Richmond Promise
Neighborhood initiated the very first East End Community
Field Day and the
momentum is going
strong! This year we
counted 770
attendees but those
were just the ones
we could count. More
than sixty
organizations were
represented at this
year's event,
providing resources,
learning opportunities, healthy foods, and more. Children's
activities kept the kids busy, while parents and residents
visited various stations like the CPR education table and the
RBHA's Infant and Toddler Connection station. We had a live
performances from BtheMovement, Dawn "Estelle" Archer,
Heart Man, Zumba with Dionnne, Billy Taylor and his Band,
and theDMV Snap Dragon. First District Richmond Police
Department's Officer El'Amin DJ'd throughout the day. Even
in 90 degree heat and humidity, East Enders were there to
support and enjoy this community-lead event. Thank you to
American Heart Association Greater Richmond and YMCA of
Greater Richmond for your partnership and to all the other

PPDC Welcomes New AmeriCorps VISTA Mentor
Coordinator
We have a new
Mentor Coordinator
thanks to our
partnership with
Virginia Mentoring
Partnership and their
AmeriCorps VISTA
Program. Michael
Bledsoe recently
moved to Richmond
from Gainesville, FL
where he studied
history at the
University of Florida.
Michael was inspired
by his brother's work
with special-needs
youth in Jacksonville,
and wanted to make
a similar impact in the lives of others. With this in mind he
has come to Peter Paul to serve as our Mentor Program
Coordinator. "Since coming to Peter Paul, I have been struck
by the dedication and selflessness of our mentors, who have
such an incredible impact on the lives of the children here. I
look forward to developing the mentoring program in
coordination with all the mentors who give so much to our
program," Michael said of his experience so far. Michael
hopes to expand on the amazing work of our previous Mentor
Coordinators by growing the program to accommodate the
many new students who will attend Peter Paul. If you are
interested in serving as a mentor this year, you can reach
Michael at mbledsoe@peterpauldevcenter.org.
We are happy to welcome Michael to Peter Paul and we
know that he will contribute so much to our students and the
mentoring program.

has all been possible because of our Campaign for the

Richmond's East
End.
To give our
students the
opportunity to
invest in the
Center and its
growth, we
included our
students in a campaign effort over the eight weeks of
Summer Promise - the "Small Change Makes Big Change"
campaign. At the start of the summer each student received a
small change box to collect donations. They were
encouraged to raise funds amongst their friends, family, and
neighbors. Students turned in their collected change to a
larger change box in the Peter Paul lobby throughout the
summer. On the 27th, we celebrated our student's efforts with
a big Pancake Breakfast, which was also an opportunity to
fundraise for the Campaign. Guests paid for pancakes,
toppings, breakfast sides, refreshments and a dessert raffle,
with proceeds going to support the campaign. It was a great
event!
We work to teach our students to give back, which is a
powerful way to feel like and BE a member of their
community. When the doors of our expanded building open,
our students will know that they helped build the walls of their
new classrooms.
Summer Promise Lowdown
A Snapshot on Some of the Highlights from Summer
Promise
Keeping kids busy is something Peter Paul has gotten pretty
good at. Summer Promise is an especially good example of
that skill, which is when our students are with us for full days
over eight weeks. Here, we have just a snapshot of all that
our students were up to during Summer Promise 2016.
Students visited the
Virginia Museum of
Fine Arts to view the
Kehinde Wiley exhibit.
Wiley is a New York-
based artist, whose
work fuses
contemporary black
culture with traditional
art styles.
Each grade level
visited the newly
renovated and
relocated Black History
Museum. Students
toured the beautiful
facility on Leigh Street,
learning about the
history of their
ancestors here in
Richmond.
There was a big push
for community service
projects this year. Teachers coordinated their own unique
efforts to give students the chance to give back. This included
an organization-wide Anthem LemonAid Stand, trash pick-up,
and water bottles for a local senior's home.
Peter Paul has been taking students to Roslyn Retreat
Center for the last 8 years for Clare's Camp. For a week,
students from both the Center and Fairfield Court, spend
every day out at the beautiful riverfront property for outdoor
activities, learning, and fun.
Fourth and fifth graders were certified in 4H's Health Rocks!®
program. Health Rocks!® is a curricula designed for eight to
fourteen year olds and focuses on healthy living.
Finally, our Fairfield Court Summer Promise students
participated in a language program, implemented by students
from Maggie Walker Governor School. All four grade levels
learned Spanish, French, German, Italian, and sign language.
They also sampled different foods from the cultures they
learned about.
It is no surprise that after a very full eight weeks our students
are tuckered out but they will be back for more after a short
break. Students will be back in the building on September 12
and Farifled Court and Woodville programming will start on
Monday, September 19 for the 2016-2017 year!

where they canoed, kayaked, swam,
and played on the beach. Thanks to
Boo and Jim Smythe for making this
trip possible for our students.
