TASKBAR & START MENU PROPERTIES

5. TASKBAR
In windows 7 Taskbar instance of an application can easily be created by using Win +
Number Key. Here number key signifies the position of the Application in the Taskbar.
If you press Windows + 1, it will create a new instance of the first icon in the task bar.
In the taskbar Shown here it will open an instance of Internet Explorer while Win+5
open Windows media Player, Win+7 to Windows Live writer and so on.
6. BUTTON COMBINATION IN THE TASKBAR
• Always combine, hide labels
• This is the default setting. Each program appears as a single, unlabeled icon, even when multiple items for a
program are open.
• Combine when taskbar is full
This setting shows each item as an individual, labeled icon. When the taskbar becomes crowded, programs with multiple
open items collapse into a single program icon. Clicking the icon displays a list of the items that are open. Both this setting
and Never combine resemble the look and behavior of earlier versions of Windows.
• Never combine
• This setting is similar to Combine when taskbar is full, except icons never collapse into a single icon, regardless of how many
windows are open. As more programs and windows open, icons decrease in size and eventually scroll within the taskbar.
7. To turn off auto-hide
1. Click to open Taskbar and Start Menu Properties.
2. Clear the Auto-hide the taskbar check box, and then click OK.
The notification area
The notification area, on the far right side of the taskbar,
includes a clock and a group of icons. It looks like this.
The notification area is located on the right side of the taskbar
by default, and it contains program icons that provide status
and notifications about things like incoming e-mail, updates,
and network connectivity. When you install a new program,
you can sometimes add an icon for that program to the
notification area
8. Start a program from the taskbar
You can start a program or additional instances of a program quickly and easily by pinning it to the
taskbar.
Start programs from the taskbar using the Jump List
Temporarily preview the desktop using Aero Peek
You can temporarily view the desktop using Aero Peek.
This can be useful for quickly viewing desktop gadgets and
folders, or
when you don’t want to minimize all open windows and then
have to restore them.
11. Jump Lists
With Jump Lists, We Can Quickly Find Files That You've Worked With Recently. Right-click A Program Icon
On The Taskbar To See A List Of Recently-opened Files. You Can Also Pin Files That You Use Regularly To A
Jump List. Some Jump Lists Show Commands For Common Tasks, Like Playing Music Or Videos.

Windows 7 that shows recently
used files for a particular
application or related tasks to an
application. Jump lists can be
accessed by right clicking an
application icon in Windows 7
taskbar.
12. POWER BUTTON ACTION
The “Shut Down” button in Windows 7 can be customized
with another action, if you use shut down action very
rarely, but you more often restart it or put it on hibernate.
To change the action of shutdown button, Right click the
Start Button, go to Properties and choose the „Power Boot
Action” to do whatever you want, from the given options.
It will give you a drop down list amongst following option
to select from.
• Switch user
• Log off
• Lock
• Restart
• Sleep
• Hibernate
• Shutdown
13. Clear recently opened files or programs from the Start Menu
1. Click to open Taskbar and Start Menu
Properties.
2. Click the Start Menu tab. To clear recently
opened programs, clear the Store and
display recently opened programs in the
Start menu check box. To clear recently
opened files, clear the Store and display
recently opened items in the Start menu and
the taskbar check box, and then click OK.
14. Start Menu in Windows 7 can be customized
according to user's need. All the items in Start menu
can either be set as display link or set as menu. Apart
from it there are several more things to configure.
Steps are here:
1. Right click on Start Button or taskbar of Windows7
2. 2. Click on properties. It will pop up Taskbar &
start Menu properties.
3. Select the tab “Start Menu‟. This will bring you
Customize & Privacy options.
4. Select Customize button there.
5. You can select the behavior of items in Start Menu.
If you want them to behave as link, Menu or Icon.
6. Behavior of items like my computer, Downloads
etc. can be set.
7. Also you can choose default settings if you wish to
undo all the changes you have done. 8. Click OK to
apply the changes.

15. Add a toolbar to the taskbar
A toolbar is a row, column, or block of buttons or icons representing tasks you can
do within a program. Some toolbars can appear on the taskbar.
1. Right-click an empty area on the taskbar, and
then point to Toolbars.
2. Click any item in the list to add or remove it.
The toolbar names with check marks beside
them are already on the taskbar.
