Tonight’s Agenda  Philosophies: Share your draft  Historical perspectives of reading & literacy instruction  Literacy Leadership & Assessing a School’s Needs  Looking ahead to Feb. 16th online & Coaching Session #1 (March 2nd)  NOTE: No APA Session today as per 6915 students’ input (Course calendar revised)
  • 3. Philosophy Paper Workshop #1 6:00 – 6:20pm 1. Exchange your beliefs, paragraphs & references with at least 2 different classmates. 2. As you read your partner’s draft, write questions & comments about content in the margin. E.g., What professional literature grounds this belief? How is your belief supported in the research or by which author? How does this belief get “played out” in your practice? I’m confused by this – could you clarify the idea? Have you thought about how this idea connects to the writings of XXX?
  • 4. At 6:20pm Read comments & questions on your draft Jot down “next steps” for advancing the philosophy draft. A newly-updated draft is due Feb. 26th after the Feb. 16th ONLINE SESSION. RETURN PHILOSOPHY DRAFTS

Historical Perspectives RESOURCES & READINGS: -Turbill’s “Four Ages of Reading” -Vogt & Shearer’s “Historical Context for Teaching Reading” - Long & Seldon’s “Reading Research & Federal Policy during the past 35 years” Return to your readings and reading notes. Work together to complete the remainder of the historical overview table.

Use Ch. 4 as a resource: What information do you need before you begin to determine the school’s literacy needs? What questions would you ask of the teachers about literacy & literacy instruction? • What questions would you ask of the parents about literacy & literacy instruction?
