Primary Objective of National Food Security Mission- Rice <ul><li>Additional production of 10 MTs of rice by 2011-12 through productivity gain </li></ul>Area of Operation Target Area: 20 million ha Total identified districts: 133 in 12 following States Andhra Pradesh, Assam, Bihar, Chattisgarh, Jharkhand, Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Orissa, Tamil Nadu, Uttar Pradesh and West Bengal
  8. 8. SRI in NFSM <ul><li>5 million ha (25% of the total target area under NFSM) is being targeted for promotion of SRI through: </li></ul><ul><li>- Demonstrations </li></ul><ul><li>- Farmers Field Schools </li></ul><ul><li>- Conoweeders and other mechanical devices </li></ul>

Field Demonstrations <ul><li>Targeting 5 million ha rice area under upland and assured irrigation </li></ul><ul><li>50,000 demonstrations from 2008-09 to 2011-12 </li></ul><ul><li>10,000 demonstrations in 2008-09 </li></ul><ul><li>One demonstration (0.4 ha) at every 100 ha area </li></ul><ul><li>Rs. 3000/- per demonstration for critical inputs and incidental charges for scientist </li></ul><ul><li>Rs. 150 million have been allocated for field demonstrations </li></ul>

Farmers Field School <ul><li>5,000 Farmers Field Schools during 2008-09 to 2011-12 </li></ul><ul><li>One FFS at every 1,000 ha of rice area </li></ul><ul><li>30 farmers in each FFS </li></ul><ul><li>10 weekly sessions of training through two trainers, each session lasting for five hours </li></ul><ul><li>Rs 85 million have been allocated for Farmers Field Schools </li></ul>
  11. 11. Conoweeders <ul><li>Weeds are the major constraint in SRI </li></ul><ul><li>1 million conoweeders will be promoted during 2007-08 to 2011-12 to meet the anticipated demand </li></ul><ul><li>Rs 1350 million have been allocated to support farmers’ purchase of conoweeders </li></ul>

Some Challenges.. <ul><li>Development of Curriculum of SRI for training </li></ul><ul><li>Increased labour requirement </li></ul><ul><li>Weed management </li></ul><ul><li>Availability of power for assured irrigation </li></ul><ul><li>Knowledge sharing for adopting the global best practices </li></ul>
