Concept of Teaching ?
• Teaching is a part of teaching learning process. It is required to bring
specific changes in a person according to the need of society and
environment in which he is living. It is a process in which learners,
teacher, curriculum and other variables are organized in a systematic way
to attain some pre determined goal. It is an important part of Education

• Smith - “Teaching is a system of actions intended to produce
learning”
• Ryburns - “Teaching is a relationship which keeps the child to
develop all his powers”
• Jackson – “Teaching is a face to face encounters between to or
more persons, one of whom intends to bring certain changes in
the other participants

Teachers teach students at three levels. They have to keep in mind
about the developmental stage of the learners so that desired
educational objectives can be achieved. These three levels are.
Memory level: Thoughtless teaching.
Understanding level: Thoughtful teaching.
Reflective level: Upper thoughtful level

What is Memory level Teaching ?
Objective – To impart information or Knowledge
• Supported by Herbert’s theory of Appreciation.
• Covers only the knowledge based objective of Bloom’s Taxonomy.
• First stage of Teaching.
• Factual in Nature.
• Useful in Lower Classes
• Teacher dominated methods are used like drill, review, revision and asking
questions.
• Evaluation system – oral, written and essay-type examination.
Merits of Memory level Teaching ?
• Useful for young children.
• Helpful in learning new concepts.
• Useful for slow learners.
• Base for understanding and reflective levels.
Demerits of Memory level Teaching ?
• Not Suitable for higher classes.
• Dominance of teacher.
• Little interaction in the classroom.
• Loss of retention and recall.
• Use of rote memory.
• Problem of classroom management.
What is Understanding level of Teaching ?
Objective – To develop the cognitive abilities of the students.
• Understanding level of teaching explain pupils about the relationship
between principles and facts.
• It also lets students know where these principles are applicable.
• It comes between memory level and Reflective level.
• Understanding means to comprehend, to grasp and to have knowledge of, to
learn, to interpret and to infer, etc.
• According to Herbert three forms of mental reality - sense impressions,
images and elective elements of pleasure and pain play an important role in
understanding level.

It is the understanding of instructional messages
by means of interpreting, exemplifying, classifying,
comparing, inferring etc.
Application Objectives
It includes the use of a proper procedure for executing
and implementing the use of principle/ rules in practical
life situations.
Nature of subject matter
The content for teaching-learning at this level is quite wide as
compared to that needed at memory level teaching. The content
also includes the application of the principle/generalizations in
due real life situations.

Tests and tools should be properly planned. Planned tests could evaluate the
student’s ability to comprehend, gasp, analyze, synthesize, discriminate etc.
Merits of Understanding level

• Set stages for entering into the reflective
stage of teaching.
• Effective classroom interaction.
Demerits of Understanding
level Teaching ?
• Ignores higher cognitive abilities.
• Less emphasis on intrinsic
motivation.
• No individualized learning.
• Teacher centered
Objective –
To develop insight into the learner to solve problems.
To develop rational and critical thinking in the students.
To develop the ability of independent thinking and decision making in the students.
What is Reflective level Teaching ?
• This level is also known as introspective level. Reflecting on something means
giving careful thought to something over a period of time. It also means
thinking deeply about something.
• Reflective level of teaching is considered to be the highest level at which
teaching is carried out.
• Highest level of Teaching Learning process
Characteristics are Reflective level Teaching
The role of the teacher in this level of teaching is democratic.
The role of the students is quite active.
Teaching at the reflective level enables the students to solve the real problems of life.
A student can attain this level only after going through memory level and
understanding level.
It is highly thoughtful and useful.
At this level, the student is made to face a real problematic situation.
Merits of Reflective level Teaching ?
Demerits of Reflective level Teaching ?
• The teaching at this level is leaner- centered.
• There is an interaction between the teacher
and the taught
• Teaching is appropriate for the higher class.
• Teaching is highly thoughtful and useful than
the teaching at the memory or understanding
level.
• Not suitable for small children at the lower level of teaching.
• Therefore students cannot acquire systematic and organized knowledge of their
study courses.

  • 4. Concept of Teaching ? • Teaching is a part of teaching learning process. It is required to bring specific changes in a person according to the need of society and environment in which he is living. It is a process in which learners, teacher, curriculum and other variables are organized in a systematic way to attain some pre determined goal. It is an important part of Education Some definitions • Smith - “Teaching is a system of actions intended to produce learning” • Ryburns - “Teaching is a relationship which keeps the child to develop all his powers” • Jackson – “Teaching is a face to face encounters between to or more persons, one of whom intends to bring certain changes in the other participants

  • 11. Teachers teach students at three levels. They have to keep in mind about the developmental stage of the learners so that desired educational objectives can be achieved. These three levels are. Memory level: Thoughtless teaching. Understanding level: Thoughtful teaching. Reflective level: Upper thoughtful level
  • 12. Hierarchy of Levels of Teaching ? Reflective Level Understanding Level Memory Level Most Thoughtful Less Thoughtful Thoughtful
  • 13. What is Memory level Teaching ? Objective – To impart information or Knowledge • Supported by Herbert’s theory of Appreciation. • Covers only the knowledge based objective of Bloom’s Taxonomy. • First stage of Teaching. • Factual in Nature. • Useful in Lower Classes • Teacher dominated methods are used like drill, review, revision and asking questions. • Evaluation system – oral, written and essay-type examination.
  • 14. Merits of Memory level Teaching ? • Useful for young children. • Helpful in learning new concepts. • Useful for slow learners. • Base for understanding and reflective levels. Demerits of Memory level Teaching ? • Not Suitable for higher classes. • Dominance of teacher. • Little interaction in the classroom. • Loss of retention and recall. • Use of rote memory. • Problem of classroom management.
  • 15. What is Understanding level of Teaching ? Objective – To develop the cognitive abilities of the students. • Understanding level of teaching explain pupils about the relationship between principles and facts. • It also lets students know where these principles are applicable. • It comes between memory level and Reflective level. • Understanding means to comprehend, to grasp and to have knowledge of, to learn, to interpret and to infer, etc. • According to Herbert three forms of mental reality - sense impressions, images and elective elements of pleasure and pain play an important role in understanding level.

Objectives of Understanding level of Teaching Objectives Understanding objectives It is the understanding of instructional messages by means of interpreting, exemplifying, classifying, comparing, inferring etc. Application Objectives It includes the use of a proper procedure for executing and implementing the use of principle/ rules in practical life situations. Nature of subject matter The content for teaching-learning at this level is quite wide as compared to that needed at memory level teaching. The content also includes the application of the principle/generalizations in due real life situations.

Methods used for teaching in Understanding level of Teaching Classroom climate Lecture method Lecture-demonstration Discussion Exemplification and explanation Inductive-deductive More likely and encouraging as compared to that of memory level teaching. Learners are actively engaged in the learning process. Learners are actively engaged in the learning process.
  • 18. Nature of motivation Teaching equipment Motivation at understanding level of teaching is extrinsic as well as intrinsic in nature. Models charts flash cards Pictures, etc. Evaluation Tests and tools should be properly planned. Planned tests could evaluate the student’s ability to comprehend, gasp, analyze, synthesize, discriminate etc.

Merits of Understanding level Teaching ? • Effective Learning • Development of different cognition abilities. • Set stages for entering into the reflective stage of teaching. • Effective classroom interaction. Demerits of Understanding level Teaching ? • Ignores higher cognitive abilities. • Less emphasis on intrinsic motivation. • No individualized learning. • Teacher centered
  • 20. Objective – To develop insight into the learner to solve problems. To develop rational and critical thinking in the students. To develop the ability of independent thinking and decision making in the students. What is Reflective level Teaching ? • This level is also known as introspective level. Reflecting on something means giving careful thought to something over a period of time. It also means thinking deeply about something. • Reflective level of teaching is considered to be the highest level at which teaching is carried out. • Highest level of Teaching Learning process
  • 21. Characteristics are Reflective level Teaching The role of the teacher in this level of teaching is democratic. The role of the students is quite active. Teaching at the reflective level enables the students to solve the real problems of life. A student can attain this level only after going through memory level and understanding level. It is highly thoughtful and useful. At this level, the student is made to face a real problematic situation.
  • 22. Merits of Reflective level Teaching ? Demerits of Reflective level Teaching ? • The teaching at this level is leaner- centered. • There is an interaction between the teacher and the taught • Teaching is appropriate for the higher class. • Teaching is highly thoughtful and useful than the teaching at the memory or understanding level. • Not suitable for small children at the lower level of teaching. • Therefore students cannot acquire systematic and organized knowledge of their study courses.
