Professor Ben Shneiderman , a computer
scientist at the Human Computer Interaction
Lab at the University of Maryland, College
Park.

6.  Usability is about effectiveness,efficiency and
the overall satisfaction of the user.
 Usability is a combination of factor including
 Intuitive design
 Ease of learning
 Efficiency of use
 Memorability
 Error frequency and severity
 Subjective satisfaction

7.  Learnability: How easy is it for users to
accomplish basic tasks the first time they
encounter the design?
 Efficiency: Once users have learned the design,
how quickly can they perform tasks?
 Memorability: When users return to the design
after a period of not using it, how easily can they
reestablish proficiency?
 Errors: How many error do users make, how
severe are these errors, and how easily can they
recover from the errors?
 Satisfaction: How pleasant is it to use the design?

8. There are three challenges are focused:
(1) Technology variety
(2) User diversity
(3) Gaps in user knowledge

9.  The first challenge is to cope with the technology variety by
supporting the 100 to 1 range of hardware, software and network
access speeds.

10.  The second challenge is to accommodate the enormous diversity of
users.

11.  The third challenge is to bridge the gap between what users know
and what they need to know.

12. Universal usability refers to the design of information and
communications products and services that are usable for
every citizen. Usability is a measure of a product's potential
to achieve a user's goals. In information technology, the term
is often used in connection with software applications and
websites, but can also be used with any product used to
accomplish a task.
