3. Usability?
Usability is a measure of how comfortable a specific user in specific
context use a product/design to achieve a defined goal effectively,
efficiently and satisfactorily.
“Usability is about human behavior. It recognizes that humans are
lazy, get emotional, are not interested in putting a lot of effort into,
say, getting a credit card and generally prefer things that are easy
to do vs. those that are hard to do.”
By
David McQuillen
4. Usability Cont..
usability depends on how well its features accommodate users’
needs and contexts.
The word "usability" also refers to methods for improving simple-of-
use during the design process.
>> Usability: How easy and pleasant these features are to use.
5. Usability Cont..
Usability is defined by 5 quality components
• Learnability: How easy is it for users to attain basic tasks the first time they impact
the design?
• Efficiency: Once users have learned the design, how quickly can they perform
tasks?
• Memorability: When users return to the design after a period of not using it, how
easily can they reestablish efficiency?
• Errors: How many errors do users make, how severe are these errors, and how
easily can they improve the errors?
• Satisfaction: A user, How pleasant? After using the design(Application).
6. Usability Cont..
Why Usability Is Important
• If home page or landing page of any website is not design properly or don’t satisfied
the user. They won’t go to inside the website.
• If content is not understood by the user, they leave the website frequently.
for example: put difficult meaning, abstract heading.
• If user is not satisfied at once, they don’t want to go to same website again. Because
fist impression is last impression.
• Content should be in a proper way.
if you are differentiate some thing, you should define in tabular form so user can understand esly.
7. Universal Usability?
Universal usability refers to the design of information and
communications products and services that are usable for every
citizen.
“having more than 90% of all households as successful users of
information and communications services at least once a week.”
By
pioneer Ben Shneiderman(HCI)
8. Universal Usability Cont.…
• The concept of Universal Usability is Usable by All.
• It is also close to “Universal Design”.
• Think about Universal Usability as “Goal” not an outcome.
• Universal usability accounts for users of all ages, experience
levels, and physical or sensory limitations.
• Users also vary widely in their technical circumstances:
• Screen size: Mobile, laptop, android tv etc.
• Network speed: if network is slow, it should be load text only.
• Browser Version: appearance depends on browser and browser version.
• specialized software: screen readers for visual impaired.
10. Principles of Universal
Usability
• Equitable use
• Flexibility in use
• Simple and intuitive
• Perceptible information
• Tolerance for error
• Low physical effort
• Size and space for approach and use
11. Goals of universal design
• Body Fit
• Comfort
• Awareness
• Understanding
• Wellness
• Social Integration
• Personalization
• Cultural Appropriateness
12. Some Example of universal design
• Visual output redundant with information in auditory output
• Contrast controls on visual output
• Use of meaningful icons with text labels
• Clear lines of sight to reduce dependence on sound
• Volume controls on auditory output
• Speed controls on auditory output
• Choice of language on speech output
• Signs with light-on-dark visual contrast
• Web pages that provide alternative text to describe images
• Instruction that presents material both orally and visually
• Labels in large print on equipment control buttons
