Movie Poster Analysis
1. Spectre Analysis
• In this ‘TEASER POSTER’ we get a shot of James Bond in a
casual looking outfit of a black turtle neck and black jeans he is
looking like a normal person however he is giving the camera an
intense stare which makes him intimidating.
• The headline is centered right on top of the stars chest which
shows he could be a central character within the film and if anyone
has seen the previous James Bond films they would know who he is
and his importance to the film.
• Just below the name of the film, we see the 007 logo which is
extremely well known this has been placed there so even if you
don’t know what the name Spectre is you will still be interested in
the film because it is James Bond and the 007 logo shows everyone
that.
• In his right hand he can be seen holding a gun this is significant as
he is a trained killer with a “license to kill” So him holding the gun
reflects his characters traits.
• The bottom of the poster shows the credits which include MGM,
Sony, Colombia, 007.com so it shows there is vast marketing
campaigns set up for this
• Also it says ‘COMING SOON’ which shows it is only a teaser
trailer which gives the minimum away.
2. Inception Analysis
• At the top of the poster we see ‘LEONARDO DICAPRIO’s’ name
Printed across the top resembling a banner this is effective because if it
was positioned at a bus stop his name is easily viewable and the viewer will
be very interested and assume the film has a certain amount of quality
which he brings to the film production. Leonardo DiCaprio also brings a
certain amount of bankability to the film.
• There is a sell line saying “YOUR MIND IS THE SCENE OF THE
CRIME” this provides the first glimpse of the plot of the film because
Leonardo DiCaprio’s character is a thief but he steals peoples dreams and
inserts thoughts into people’s mind.
• The image of Leonardo DiCaprio standing in the water is a comparison to
the phrase (in deep-water) In the film his character is running from
America because he is being accused a crime he never committed (killing
his wife)
• In the title ‘INCEPTION’ we can see the image of a maze this is used
because the mind is like a maze that Leonardo DiCaprio can navigate his
way around.
• He is shown holding a gun which makes him appear dangerous and like he
could become a threat at any time.
• In the credits we can see that this film has been made by the same person
as The Dark Knight which shows it is a highly esteemed director, also it
informs the audience it can be watched in Imax cinemas.
3. Joker Teaser Poster
• This teaser poster is very effective for multiple reasons one being the fact it is an
ambiguous poster there is no indication to who this character is and makes the
audience very curious about who this man is however fans of the comics will
know the burgundy and purple colours and green hair have long been associated
with the baddest bad guy the Joker. I feel the image is much more important
than the name or release year as people will associate the Joker with bad guys
and will enforce the point the film is about villains of DC.
• The purple holster is important it shows the viewer he is a villain as he has a gun
in his holster. It gives the viewer an idea that the Joker is very violent and we can
also see he maybe lives for the thrill as there is multiple bullet holes around the
Joker
• Joker’s tattoos give a clue to non comic readers who the man in purple is as the
one on his right shows a Joker cards emblem which could give people a clue to
who this demented man is.
• On the other side is HAHAHAHAHA which is a trademark of Joker with his
evil laugh which has become a main trait of the character, The tattoo on his
forehead saying ’damaged’ is very effective it gives the audience a new twist on
the Joker.
• The release date showing just as 2016 will entice the audience into watching the
film as they are being shown a small glimpse but have to wait for the films actual
release date and for the movies most important anti-hero.
• Another interesting thing within this poster is the colour of the Jokers skin in an
extreme white shade which makes him look other worldly and almost a monster
with his green hair. I think the director has used the Verfremdungseffekt to
distance The Joker and the audience.
4. The Adjustment
Bureau Analysis
• The backdrop of New York is very iconic and one of the reasons
they have put it on the teaser poster as it sets the location of the
film up and interests people.
• The shadows of the men against the buildings are very ambiguous
and could show danger as the colour black often does portray
danger and death.
• The image of ‘MATT DAMON’ and ‘EMILY BLUNT’ running
can be linked to the shadows as it shows they are scared and
running from the shadows.
• This film doesn’t appear to be an action film as the way they're
dressed is very formal and they look as if they have been to an
important meeting/dinner.
• The actors names are the same size as the films title this could
show that the stars are important and are being relied on to bring
in the highest possible amount of paying customers.
• The fact it says ‘FIGHT FOR YOUR FATE’ connotes that for
some reason there life is at risk of rapidly changing, also the title
being ‘ADJUSTMENT BUREAU’ showing there fate will be
changed and adjusted over the course of the film.
5. Suicide Squad
• This poster I feel is very important as it is the first where we see the
Suicide Squad all together it sets the tone for the film with who will
and wont be important within the film as may characters seen in the
trailer are not here and therefore not as important it also sets a tone
as the characters here are mostly well known actors
• The colours in this poster is a very vibrant mix which we as an
audience might associate with the suicide squad as they were thrown
together much like the colour scheme of this poster, The purple eyes
once again link back to the Jokers strong presence within the film.
• This poster also introduces characters and develops them we see
Harley Quinn standing there looking and waving at the camera
which makes her seem cheeky/menacing also we see them all in full
costumes which makes them much more appealing to the audience
and would make people interested in the film.
• In all Posters for the main films characters The Joker is included each
time this is because most people will know of the Joker and this will
give the film a certain amount of bankability as they will know The
Joker is comic book royalty.
• The fact the names of key actors are put at the bottom of the poster
shows they're looking to inform people about who is going to star in
the film.
