READING RESEARCH PAPER
Dr. Heta Patel (PT)
Ph.D. Scholar
LITERACY IS A BRIDGE FROM MISERY TO
HOPE.
—KOFI ANNAN
HOW COMMUNITY RECOGNIZE THE
RESEARCHER?
 Sometime they viewed as strange people.
 Who deal with insignificant problem.
 Even they are out of the touch with real world.
WILL EVERYONE BE A RESEARCHER?
o Many people have little interest in research per se.
o In fact, some have a decided aversion to it.
o However, need for the research cannot be denied.
RESEARCH AS PRIMARY DISTINCTION
Research
Trade
Deals only with
how to do
something?
Profession
How and Why
something should
be done in certain
manner?
WHY MOST OF THE PEOPLE DO NOT
READ THE RESEARCH?
Belief Understanding
 Research literature is
extremely difficult for the
non researcher to
understand.
BASIC OBJECTIVE
 Common problems encounter by non researcher
while reading the research
 Suggestions while reading the research
ARE YOU AGREE?
 Scientific papers are meant not to be read but to be
published.
 Yes
 No
 Up to some extent agree
 Up to some extent disagree
WRITERS PERCEPTIVE
 Write for benefit of reader and community.
 Although, using the language which dazzles the
reader.
 Thus, create the impression that our subject matter
is esoteric than it really is.
 Ultimately, it benefited the researcher
of particular field.
PROBLEM OF JARGON
 Using jargon words confounds the outsider.
 Even, serves as short hand to researcher.
 It provide the meaning to the people with in the
field.
FOR INSTANCE
Words Research terminology
Now At this point of time
Do Perform
Start Initiate
End Terminate
Drug Chemotherapeutic agent
NEED TO BRIDGE THE GAP
 Gap is imposing between the researcher and
practitioner.
 To exemplify,
Webpage for the American Kinesiology Association
www.americankinesiology.org have regular session
on applied research.
PROBLEM OF STATISTICAL ANALYSIS
 Big stumbling block
 FRIGHTENING someone who is trying to read
research
 Are you still not agree??
THAN EXPLAIN THIS
 “The tetrachoric correlations among the test
variables were subjected to a centroid factor
analysis and orthogonal rotations of the
primary axes were accomplished by
Zimmerman’s graphical method until simple
structure and positive manifold were closely
approximated.”
SUGGESTIONS WHILE READING THE
RESEARCH FOR NON RESEARCHER
 Be familiar
 Read only interesting things
 Read as paper
 Abstract first
 Think in terms of meaningfulness
 Be critical but objective
BE FAMILIAR
 Choose the publication.
 Become familiar with few publications that contain
pertinent research in physiotherapy field.
READ ONLY INTERESTING THINGS
 Read only studies that are of interest to you.
 The point may sound too trite.
 But, reading all the stuff may frustrating.
READ AS PAPER
 Do not look for eternal truth.
 Look for ideas and indications.
 No study is proof any thing, only when it has been
verified repeatedly does it constitute knowledge.
ABSTRACT FIRST
 Determine you wish to read the whole thing.
 Save the time.
 Find interesting, read methodology and
interpretations.
 Don’t bogged down with details.
THINK IN TERMS OF MEANINGFULNESS
 Do not be too concern about statistical significance.
 Knowing the concepts of the different types of
statistical analysis is helpful.
 But it is not crucial to being able to read the study.
 Just skip the part.
BE CRITICAL BUT OBJECTIVE
 Journals always select the paper by jury method.
 No need to be suspicious about scientific worth .
 If it is too far removed from any practical
application, no need to read it.
IN NUTSHELL,
 The more you read, the easier it become to
understand.
