3. SEWAGE
Sewage is a category of waste that mixes with water and waste
products, and these products are transmitted through a drainage
system of underground pipes.
It is released by homes, factories, hospitals, offices and other
establishments.
For e.g., in our homes, water from the showers, bathtubs, washing
machines and especially, toilets.
Sewage water, also contains harmful substances in it, which are known
as contaminants or impurities.
4. WHERE THE SEWAGE FLOW TO AND HOW?
The network system that carries the sewage from the point where it is
produced to the point of disposal is called sewerage or sewerage
system.
This system is mainly used in cities and towns to serve the entire
community.
In this system, sewage from individual buildings flows into collecting
sewers, which carry the waste to a central treatment plant for
treatment and disposal into the water bodies.
5. WASTEWATER TREATMENT PLANT
(WWTP)
The developed cities often use a sewage treatment plant, such as
WWTP
, which can remove contaminants from domestic, commercial
and industrial wastewater.
The treated sewage is then discharged into the nearby water bodies.
6. OBJECTIVES OF WASTEWATER
TREATMENT PLANT
For the production of drinking water (well water, surface water)
For desalination of brackish water and sea water
Urban Wastewater Treatment
Odour Management
Reuse of de-polluted urban Wastewater
Sludge recovery and Treatment
7. POOR SANITATION AND DISEASES
Poor Sanitation means ‘Inadequate Sewage Disposal’.
Contaminated drinking water causes diseases, such as Cholera,
Typhoid, Dysentery, Polio, Meningitis, Hepatitis, and many more.
In many villages across India, there are open drains to dispose of the
sewage. The stagnant water in the open drains begins to stink. Flies
and mosquitoes breed in such places. Bacteria and other
microorganisms also grow in that dirty place. All these spread
diseases.
8. WASTEWATER AND THE
RESPONSIBILITY OF A GOOD CITIZEN
Our duty is to flow only the cleaner water in the waterbodies into our
locality.
As the generation of wastewater can’t be avoided, we should take
care, so that it does not harm the environment.
We should ask the civic bodies (civilians) in our locality to cover the
open drains in the locality.
There are many such roles which you must do in order to manage
Wastewater.

After treatment, wastewater is disposed of in the local water bodies.
