Introductionโฆ
Today, we are going to discuss Rotaryโs finances. Specifically, membership dues. Then weโll open it up for a discussion and to ask questions of our panel.
Letโs take a quick look at how Rotary was founded on transparency and stewardship.
Lori, when did Rotary start mandating membership dues?
A: The first Rotary club meeting takes place in 1905, but it wasnโt until 5 years later, when the National Association of Rotary Clubs is formed, that members are required to pay membership dues. At the time, they paid XXX.
Ron, in 2016, the Council on Legislation voted to increase membership dues by $4 every year for 3 years. This was a big deal since Rotary hadnโt increased membership dues like that in decades. Why such a large increase in membership dues? A: It was necessary. Operating a global membership organization required more funds than what was available. Plus, our members were asking more of RI โ more tools, more products, more services. That too, required additional funding. So, the board out forth an amendment to increase membership dues and it passed. And since then, weโve been making significant investments in our members by providing enhanced products, tools and services, which is what our membership asked of us.
This past April, the COL voted again to increase membership dues by $1 every year for the next 3 years. Hans, why did we need another dues increase?
A: This time, the additional funding was needed to help implement our strategic plan, which sets the framework for our future, ensuring that we continue to be known as a respected, dynamic organization.
Membership dues are one of the three sources of RI revenue, but itโs by far, the largest.
Membership dues are one of the three sources of RI revenue, but itโs by far, the largest.
Letโs talk about your dues action. What exactly has your RI membership dues paid for so far?
Quite a bit actually.
QUESTION: SO WE WANT MARY BETH TO READ THESE SLIDES OR FORMAT THEM LIKE Q&A FOR THE PANELISTS TO EXPLAIN?
Over the past three years, weโve made several upgrades to Rotaryโs digital platforms.
Rotary Club Central, to help you set goals and track trends.
Rotary.org, the public facing side of our website.
And this past August, we launched a brand new online learning center. Learning and professional development is key part of the Rotarian experience, so we wanted to offer our members a platform to achieve those goals.
The new site includes features like virtual badges that learners can earn upon completing a course. There are also dashboards that track your progress. There are more than 350 courses offered in 20 languages on a variety of topics. And that will only continue to grow over time, providing you with even more learning opportunities.
Thereโs a lot of upgrades we made to the interface of these digital tools โ what you can see and interact with. But we also made upgrades behind the scenes too. Like improving infrastructure and hardware. These are critical aspects of any technology upgrade.
Your membership dues made these technological upgrades possible.
We canโt talk about upgrading our technology without talking about security.
In todayโs technology-driven world, organizations have to protect userโs personal information. And Rotary is no different.
Since data security is so important to Rotary, we have put a lot of resources into protecting your personal information. Weโve upgraded our tools and platforms to be more secure. We have a team of individuals in Rotary dedicated to keeping your data safe and are proactively finding new tools that protect your personal information.
This falls under the โbehind the scenesโ upgrades we talked about moments ago. You may not be able to see it, but it is a vital aspect of our work.
Your membership dues help make strong security possible.
How many people in here have used assets from Rotaryโs people of action campaign?
(PAUSE and look around)
Excellent. I hope some of you will share your stories when we open it for discussion.
For this who may not be aware, the People of Action campaign focuses on raising public awareness and understanding of Rotary. Itโs our global advertising campaign on a local level. The goal is to show our members as People of Action who see a problem and solve it. It helps the public understand who our members are and the impact Rotarians make in local communities.
We offer videos, photos, create-your-own templates for print ads, and social media posts, ready to download for your club to use.
Your membership dues help make this campaign possible.
This is just a brief collection of some of the great things Rotary has been able to provide its members. The list goes on. But we want to hear from you, so letโs open it up for discussion.
If you have a question for our panel or want to share your own experiences using and engaging with Rotaryโs products or tools, step up to the microphone.
Thank you for attending our session today.
We have a handout for those interested in seeing the complete list of items RI membership dues help support. Please grab one on your way out. They are in English only.

Now, imagine you are walking over rough terrain and crossing riverbeds with the hot sun beating down, all so you can deliver the polio vaccine to a child. With virtual reality, you can go on this journey, without leaving your chair.
VR is an innovative way to engage potential and current donors, members and the public. It allows viewers to experience Rotaryโs impact like never before.
Last year, we introduced our latest virtual reality film, Two Drops of Patience. That scenario I presented to you is from this film. We follow Patience as she treks throughout Uganda to vaccinate children. Itโs an emotional, inspiring journey that is made possible because of VR.
There are now three films in our library, which you can access through the VR app on your smartphone device, or head to the House of Friendship to watch it while you are here. When youโre at the VR Zone, donโt miss the trailer for our newest film, to be released in 2020.
