Unsure Ozeane, nos oceans, our oceans
Did you know that every year, 8.8 million tons of plastics make their way into our Oceans? Putting hundreds of species at risk of extinction.8.8 million, it’s enough plastic to cover our entire oceans by 2040.
Scary statistic, especially once you realize that 90% of plastic pollution around the world only comes from 10 rivers! Just 10 rivers. Only 10 rivers.
My name is Ludovic Grosjean. And I have 3 passions. I love people, I love Engineering and I love our Oceans. And today, I would like to tell you a story.
I have always been fascinated by my grandfather. He was an Engineer, and left me with 1 key message. What can you do, in this world to make a difference?
Until one day, I can still picture it, I arrived on this incredible and remote beach, the smell of the Ocean, the whistle of the wind, the beach covered with shells.
Until suddenly, I was struck. In front of me, Dozens of birds, ripped off bodies, plastic in their stomach.
I was shocked, I rushed home and scrapped the web all night.
I found out that many endangered species have the same fate. In fact, most of the seafood that finishes in our plates contains contaminated plastic.
I could no longer stand there and be a spectator of our oceans getting filled with litter. So I decided to set up OceanX Group, an environmental Consultancy proposing innovative solutions to monitor the environment.
But let’s step back for a minute. Why are animals eating plastic on the first place?
Well, the reason is simple: they sometimes mistake plastic as food they would normally expect to find in their natural environment
Today, getting rid of water pollution is one of the most urgent matters for our planet. It would benefit millions of people who have poor access to clean water, and would help the environment to recover. This is critical to maintain the fragile equilibrium of a healthy food chain.
Luckily innovators from all around are awaking.
In 2013, Boyan Slat founded The Ocean Cleanup to develop advanced technology to get rid the plastic continent in the middle of the Pacific of the size of Texas.
However, the best way to get rid of the pollution is still to stop it at its sources, before it reaches the ocean on the first place.
Not an easy task either, however, given that 90% of the plastic pollution is generated from 10 rivers around the world, we have a huge potential to make a lasting impact if we are already focusing on those 10 rivers.
I always wanted to save our Oceans. And the best way to do it is to stop the pollution at its sources. So that’s what we started on a small scale, here in Melbourne.
As a result, for the past 2 years, Melbourne City Rotaract Club has been working on cleaning up the Yarra River. We have been removing everything from plastic bottles, polystyrene, bike helmets, and syringes.
In fact, how many volunteers like this, do we need to keep our entire planet clean? Why don’t we Automate it, once and for all?
The Ocean CleanX was born.
Our project, The Ocean CleanX, has the potential to change the life of millions of people, all around the world.
How? We are literally teaching machines to detect and remove pollution straight out, of the environment.
To make it work, we need to show computers, millions of pollution pictures from the cleanest to the dirtiest rivers in the world, from every possible angle.
And it can be summarize in 4 steps! - S for SOCIAL MEDIA
By collecting pollution images, we train an algorithm to recognise common forms of solid pollutants.
To make it work, we need millions of volunteers, like yourself, taking picture of pollution in the environment and tag it.
If each one of us could take 1 pollution picture, we could save our Oceans together within seconds.
T for Technology
Artificial Intelligence is the way to move forward. It works the same way an infant brain develops. It can be easily trained to recognize patterns in images. This means that over time our algorithm will become better at recognising any type of pollution.
E for Environment
If we are able to detect pollution autonomously, we can remove it in real-time.
This means you can use cameras everywhere around our smart cities: on litter traps, storm water infrastructure, or drones. And not only near water.
When you can identify, track and quantify how much pollution is passing through, you can also automatically remove it or stop it at its sources.
P for PUBLIC AWARENESS
Once we know where the pollution is coming from, the next step is to inform, and we need leaders to introduce the change.
As a community, we have the power to make a difference. And, Today, we can end one of the biggest threat to humanity, affecting our health. We must stop the pollution at its sources.
But we need to work together. We need more “People of Actions” like yourself to make a difference. What you can do is join Rotary Club Group of actions such as ESRAG
You can set up your own environment project through the End Plastic Soup initiative.
Or simply reach out to many project around the world who are making a difference
So today its my turn to leave you with one gift, one key message, each one of us has the power to make a difference. But we need to work together to get rid of this rising plastic tide.
What if
Rotaract events in vienna, didnt knew many people. Didnt knew more than 2 interactors, no rotarians
Initial situation in our district.
Interesting fact: intaract, rotaract, rotary clubs overaged
In AT rotary clubs had a focus on privacy, thats why we focussed at the beginning in Rotaract/interact.
We as rotaract cant complain that rotary clubs do not take care of us if we are not taking care of interact. Rotaract grows from interact, rotary from rotaract
Believe it or not, focus was not on making good photos at the beginning, it was on work. And of course on having fun.
PHILLIP-SEBASTIAN MARCHL + PETER RABENSTEINER.
No one of us would have been able or would have had the capability to set up the programme. We only got strong as team. Today im here to represent our joint efforts.
Mentoring: not a new or rocket science idea, but a good approach for rotary/rotaract/interact
House Building: more later, develop new projects or use/transform existing projects

We have developed a handbook, on how to start, some ideas, some main tasks.
What to take with you?
I told you our initial situation in the beginning, and what we – not my team and me, the whole district – accomplished now. This is only possible with the strong support of rotarian friends and the governors.
We did not made rocket science, we used and adopted two existing concepts – mentoring, houses – and brought it to rotary.
Im just standing here to tell you about the progress we made withing the last year in district 1910/1920.
