5. 1. ID the idiom
Before place setting became popular in the 1700s, people
used to bring their own cutlery when they visited others’
homes. Back then, slaves, landless workers, and
landowners alike used to have dirt and soil under their
fingernails. Thus it was important for the affluent, ie the
landowners to carry a special type of cutlery with them so
as not to be mistaken for a person of lower standing in
society. Thus, this cutlery was used as a status symbol; a
passport of sorts which entitled them to certain privileges.
The idiom based on the above origin is used to describe a
rich person who does not deserve to live so comfortably,
but rather inherited this wealth.

26. 1. What tactic did Gavaskar use
against Bhat?
We have heard of many cricket anecdotes such as Virender
Sehwag hitting Razzaq out of the stadium to lose the reversing
ball. Here’s one about Sunny.
In the 1981-82 Ranji season, Karnataka was well on top of
Bombay, and left arm orthodox spinner Raghuram Bhat was
turning the ball square and Gavaskar felt that he was unplayable
on that surface that day. Thus he employed a rather
unconventional tactic in order to score a slow unbeaten 18 and
save Bombay from outright defeat. There were many adverse
reactions to this tactic, with people saying that it was done in
pique. However, Gavaskar says that he saw this tactic as the only
possible solution to save his wicket, also adding that had the
match hung in the balance, he wouldn’t have resorted to this
tactic.

carried forward from the discussions the previous day.
The law would be passed only if it seems acceptable
in the debates on both days.

preview when you use the selfie camera?
Sometimes, when people think they look good and click
selfies, they are rather surprised (and dejected) to see

they do. However, this was found to be merely a
psychological effect of people seeing themselves
differently from how they usually do. Hence, by 2016,
most phones did something to the image preview while in
selfie mode, so that people would feel it easier to judge
their own looks and evaluate whether they were confident
enough to post the selfie on social media.
