I have learned a great deal in progressing from my preliminary magazine task to the full product. For the preliminary task, I did not include a model on the front cover or edit the image, but learned that was an error. The full product front cover features an edited image of a memorable model to draw attention. I also familiarized myself more with music magazine conventions, like adding photography and stories to the contents page to make it more appealing similar to influences like NME. Overall, I honed skills that allowed me to create a more professional magazine in the style of NME or Vibe, appealing to a wider audience than just the middle class parents of my preliminary task.
1. Question 7: Looking back at your
preliminary task, what do you feel
you have learnt in the progression
from it to the full product?
2. • Looking back to my preliminary task I can see that I have learnt a lot. In my
opinion I have learnt how to make a professional looking magazine and I see
that as a great accomplishment. While for my preliminary magazine I
decided that I did not need to have a discernible model for my front cover
(as shown below), I realized the massive error of my ways when researching
other magazines and put in a memorable model who I felt would draw
audience attention easily. Aside from that I also edited the image for my
front cover a lot more than I did for my preliminary front cover as I got rid
of any blemishes on the model and also darkened the area around him
which is in contrast to the little to no editing that I did on my preliminary
front cover. We can also see that opposed to having a conservative
politician on the front (conservatism connotes wealth and tradition views)
we have someone that my core audience of 16-30 will find easier to relate
to.
3. • I also feel that I have familiarized my self to a more succinct degree
with the proper conventions of a music magazine. While on my
original contents page I do have any puff text or even an image
behind the page numbers it. To make my contents page more
appealing I have added my own photography and a host of
interesting stories around it in a similar vain to NME who I took
direct influence from as I felt that as a hybrid magazine I needed to
have bit more of a rock look. I also feel that we can see someone
that a lot of the readers can relate to as you looks similar in dress
and in class to them while also having a background that looks
rundown and urban as many of the environments that they are
living in would be.
4. Overall,
• I feel that I have honed a lot of the skills that
were just developing when I started making my
preliminary task and through finishing my print
media project I have managed to create a
professional looking magazine in the same vain as
NME or Vibe as opposed to the budget school
magazine that my preliminary task looked like. I
have also managed to appeal to a wider range of
people than just Middle class B-C2 parents as I
was in my preliminary task as I feel I know appeal
to Working class and middle class young adults
and teens in the C1-E categories.
