3. In what ways does your media product use, develop or
challenge forms and conventions of real media products?
I have challenged the convention
forms of a film poster by having my
film’s title vertically rather than going
across the poster. I did this because I
believe this composition is attractive
and would catch someone’s attention.
I developed on the standard
conventions of a film poster as
most of the posters I looked at
revealed the antagonist’s mask.
I got a picture of my actor in his
mask and then edited the
threshold on Photoshop to give
the picture a simple design as I
believe this gives my poster a
sense of mystery but also has
sinister undertones.
I created my own billing block to
use on my film poster. I added this
because all the posters I looked at
had one. I followed the
conventions of the billing block by
having the small text and the
pattern design of how the text fits
in with each other.
4. In what ways does your media product use, develop or
challenge forms and conventions of real media products?
My masthead challenges and also
follows real media products. I went
against the conventions because my
masthead does not have a bold font,
I believe however my masthead has
an indie style of design which is
popular in today’s generation. I
followed conventions with having
my masthead behind my image.
I followed real magazine
conventions by having
my main character of
the story standing and
staring directly into the
camera.
I followed the magazine
conventions of having a
strapline as I believe this
important feature to a magazine
as it reveals other stories to
attract readers.
I included the barcode
as I believe even
though it is only a
small feature it is
important to the
magazine. I wanted to
follow the conventions
of a real film magazine.
5. In what ways does your media product use, develop or
challenge forms and conventions of real media products?
I started my trailer with an
establishing shot of the area of which
my film is set in. I want to show the
audience that my film takes place in a
school and due to the ominous music
playing, it reveals that something
dark/sinister is going to happen. I
wanted to give the audience a false
sense of security as showing them a
shot of a school during the day would
not reveal anything right away. I
followed horror trailer conventions as
most of the trailers I researched gave
the viewer an idea of where the film
is set. This usually happened in the
very beginning of the trailer.
6. In what ways does your media product use, develop or
challenge forms and conventions of real media products?
When one of my actors is being
stalked I quickly cut to a close of
up of her face. This is when she
sees my antagonist for the first
time. I noticed that lots of horror
trailers used a close up to show
the actor’s reactions. I decided I
would follow this convention as it
is a good way to add suspension
and a nature of danger.
7. In what ways does your media product use, develop or
challenge forms and conventions of real media products?
In this is shot I followed the horror
conventions of low key lighting. The
lighting represents the negative actions
happening on the screen. The low key
lighting fits in with the whole dark
nature of the trailer.
8. In what ways does your media product use, develop or
challenge forms and conventions of real media products?
This shot challenges the horror
conventions as it is a POV shot which
most horror trailers don’t use. I wanted
to use a POV as it gives the audience a
view from the killer’s eyes which would
cause tension amongst them.
