This is my third analysis of a double page spread article.

1. Analysis of a double spread article
The article interviews a variety of Emirati and expatriate women. Its purpose is to
communicate to the readers an understanding of ‘how the U.A.E has played a monumental role
in their success and who they are today’. The article consists of: four different short
explanations, on how the U.A.E has affected four different women’s lives. In the article the
women talk about celebrating the U.A.E’s National day and the sense of unity that every Emirati
feels, on this day. They also talk about Dubai’s culture and celebrations for this day, not just at
home but throughout the U.A.E i.e. the Jumeirah, Mamzar or the U.A.E National parade.
Furthermore they talk about how they celebrate U.A.E’s National day.
‘Happy Birthday U.A.E’ is the first piece of writing on the double page spread, which
immediate clarifies the purpose of this article. Since the National day was coming up, an article
about Dubai was bound to attract readers. In the article it is shown how Dubai has changed and
some of its changes, according to the people who live or work there. The article has several
images that depict many expat and Emirati women, this makes the article more real and
relatable to the audience. Using the comparison between the past and present the writer taps
into the pride, which some readers fell about Dubai and the U.A.E, and keep them interested in
the article. The article is in the style of an interview where the journalist, gave a short
introduction on the aim of the article, then proceeded to ask questions. The language used in
this article, is formal language and the lay out is quite essay to follow and comprehend for
readers.
In the article, the colour scheme of the article is a pale sky blue colour, with black writing
and a few bits of red on the page. Using a plain colour creates a contrast with the black writing,
and the pictures allowing them to stand out and be more visible. Most of the colour comes
from the pictures, of the women on the pages and the background. Also the images on the
double page spread are related with the article: that is about U.A.E and its culture. The way the
women are dressed show of the culture of U.A.E and the business side of it, since they are
either in a hijab, abaya or business clothes. Additionally the title of the article is written in big
bold letters, to grab the reader’s attention and make them interested in the article. Another
thing that attracts readers is the subtle use of the colour red, to highlight the names of the
speakers. This drawn in the attention of the reader and focuses it to each section.
I would change the layout of the double page spread. For example the second page of the
double page spread looks a bit cramped up and the pictures look like they are placed there just
to fill up some space. I would add a border to the picture, which matched with the colour
scheme, to give the images more importance. Also I would spread them apart more on the page
of the double page spread. It is because it makes the article seem less heavily packed than it is.

2. Furthermore I would add more pictures of Dubai. What I mean is that: two pictures of the
women would have Dubai in the background and not just one. Not only this relates to the
article, but it will also underlines the focus of the article even more. Other than the images I
wouldn’t change anything else from this article.
