The Glorious Revolution of 1688-1689 replaced King James II with William III and Mary II as monarchs. James had put Catholics in positions of power and issued a Declaration of Indulgence allowing freedom of worship for Catholics and Dissenters, worrying his Protestant opponents. In response, they invited William of Orange, who was married to Mary, James' daughter, to intervene. William and Mary were offered the crown jointly by Parliament in 1689. This established Parliament as the sovereign power over taxation and royal succession, limiting the crown's authority.
