3. Brief Introduction
• MYCIN, an early expert system, or artificial
intelligence (AI) program, for
treating blood/bacterial infections in 1972.
4. How Mycin Work?
• It works on the Rule-Based System.
• Using about 500 production rules, MYCIN
operated at roughly the same level of
competence as human specialists in blood
infections.
5. Working of MYCIN – An Example
• Anyway Mycin represented its knowledge as a set of IF-THEN rules
with certainty factors. The following is an English version of one of
Mycin's rules:
IF the infection is bacterial
AND the patient has symptoms in it
THEN assign anti bacterial treatment
8. Tasks of MYCIN
• MYCIN has a four stage task
1. Decide which organisms, if any, are causing
significant disease
2. Determine the likely identity of the significant
organisms
3. Decide which drugs are potentially useful
4. Select the best drug, or combination of drugs
9. How MYCIN became Successful
Mycin introduces several new features
which have become the hallmark of
the Expert System.
10. Is Mycin used Today?
MYCIN has never been used in clinical practice due
to:
• expense of computing power required at the time
• The amount of time and typing required for a
session
• Incompleteness of the knowledge base
