1. BLSO School – Mae Sot, Thailand
Lesson Plan – Teaching English
Standard: 1 Unit: 3
Name of Topic: At the Store (Shop) Lesson Number: 1
A. Revision – reminders from the last lesson
• In the last lesson the topic was:
1. Name the topic the students’ finished last class.
2. Write 2-3 key words from that last topic on the board and ask individual students to
explain the meanings of these words.
3. Ask a student or two to come up to the whiteboard and write the word on the board for
everyone to see.
4. Ask the class to check the spelling of each word.
5. Now ask some other students to give an example of some of the words or main things
covered in that last topic.
NOTE:
• Try to remember some of the main ideas or words students may have forgotten or are
not sure about. Next time these lessons are taught teachers will be able to:
• Spend more time on parts of a topic or a lesson that students have not fully
understood and/or
• Change lesson plans so that the teacher can focus on parts that are harder for
students to understand.
• What students did last lesson was:
1. To close these parts of the new lesson have the student write a short list of the main
ideas or work just finished in the last topic.
2. Now ask students to write down some key words from last lesson, check their spelling
and have some students write on the whiteboard.
B. Introduction – explaining the work to be done this lesson
• Today we will be learning about:
NOTE:
• “At the Store (Shop).” It is probably easier for students to use the word “shop” and
• not “store”.
• Teacher can decide what words to add to this topic or this lesson, or what words can
be left out.
• On the whiteboard, write a list of the main parts of this topic students will be
learning.
• They can then tick each part off when it is finished and can put the date next to it at
the same time. They now have a clear idea of what is coming in this new topic.
1
2. • During the lesson students will be doing (or making):
1. A list of things that can be bought for school at a shop.
2. Another list of things that can be eaten and bought at another shop
3. Finally, a list of toys or presents that can be bought at a shop.
C. Activities – explaining the work to be done this lesson
1. Students write in workbooks and fill in the spaces:
My friend is ______________________ and we like to go to the shop.
NOTE:
• Before going any further, ask students to name their friend and to spell their name aloud
to the whole class – in English and in Burmese.
• The idea is to encourage students to be comfortable is switching from English to Burmese
and back to English as often as possible.
At the shop we sometimes buy:
___________________, ________________________ and ____________________
2. Now ask students to draw and label the three chosen things they have written.
3. Ask students to spell out the names of the things they can buy so that others can hear,
agree or disagree with the spelling.
4. While the students are spelling their words aloud, write each on the board, even if it is
incorrect. They and others can see the correct or incorrect spelling.
D. Conclusion – reminding students what was done this lesson and what
they will be doing in the next lesson
1. Naming a friend they might like to go to the shop with.
2. Writing their friend’s name in English and in Burmese.
3. Making a list of some things they might like to buy at a shop. E.g. things bought for
school, toys and gifts.
4. If time permits, allow some drawing of different foods, such as apple, carrot and label
them with English spelling.
5. Next lesson could begin with plurals of some of the words covered from this
lesson
SUGGESTIONS:
• The teacher could have the students rule up a table called “New Words” at the back of
their English books. The page could be divided into two columns one for the new word
and the other for the plural of the new word.
• Perhaps the table could be ruled up with three columns so that a student can include the
Burmese word in the third column.
• Try to have students regularly add new words as a habit, in their new page at the back of
their English book.
• The teacher could also set up a wall chart called “New Words for At The Shop”
