Lesson title: Spelling
Lesson title: How do I become more efficient, self-reliant speller?
Grade Level: 1,2,3,4,5,6
Author: Mariam Khalife
Description: Teaching spelling systematically can dispel the myth that spelling is
unpredictable and too confusing. Spelling is not simple, but when people understand its structure,
it is possible. Understanding the rules and patterns helps the student who doesn't intuitively pick
them up and enables the teacher to clear up confusion among poor spellers.

Objectives:
Students will identify:
1. Spelling is a possible a task that student can achieve it.
2. The strategies that can be used to become a better speller.
Materials:
1. "Words to Learn" sheet- "Look, Say, Cover, Write, Check" form - "Pal Check"
form- Make Connections form-"Study Pal Assessment" form.
2. Spelling folder.
3. High frequency words list or students’ dictionary of desired words to be spelled
correctly.

Procedure:
Step 1: Words to Learn
First, I make conference with each student to address spelling concerns. I ask my
students to circle any words in their Notebook that they would like me to spell for
them, and I correct them before they are placed on their "Words to Learn" sheet.
This all goes in a spelling folder that each student has and maintains.
I also ask students to be responsible on their own part and continually be on the
lookout for words they may need to learn how to spell. I often utilize Fridays to
remind students to update their lists, but it can work at anytime. Each student also
has a personal dictionary that includes a list of commonly misspelled words.
Several students choose these words, but they sometimes opt for a word of their
picking from the dictionary itself.

Monday: Look, Say, Cover, Write, Check
On Mondays, each student takes time to complete the "Look, Say, Cover, Write,
Check" form.
Under the first column, students write the words correctly from their "Words to
Learn" sheet. They look at the word, say the word, cover the word by folding the
first column , write the word in column two, and check it under column three (by
unfolding the first two columns). You can see a sample of this form:

Tuesday/Wednesday: Pal Check & Practice

On Tuesday or Wednesday students meet with their Study Pal and check each
other's progress through the "Pal Check" form. This is also kept in each spelling
notebook with many blank forms.
The steps include the Pal reading the words to their partner and checking them.
This is followed by trying it again if it is not correct the first time. (template form
is attached below).

• Syllabicate the challenging words in order to write
it correctly.

Thursday: Make Connections
Here is another form that can be utilized for one of your spelling Study Pal
sessions. It allows students to attack word parts from "Words to Learn" list. It is as
follows:

Friday: Study Pal Assessment
On Fridays, it takes less than ten minutes for my students to assess each other with
the "Study Pal Assessment" form. Words that are spelled correctly and mastered
receive a check mark on the "Words to Learn" form (step 1). Words that are not

mastered receive an "X" on the form or, as many have opted to do, are left blank
and tried again the following week.

How to Become a More Efficient Speller

  • 1. Voki Lesson Plan Lesson title: Spelling Lesson title: How do I become more efficient, self-reliant speller? Grade Level: 1,2,3,4,5,6 Author: Mariam Khalife Description: Teaching spelling systematically can dispel the myth that spelling is unpredictable and too confusing. Spelling is not simple, but when people understand its structure, it is possible. Understanding the rules and patterns helps the student who doesn't intuitively pick them up and enables the teacher to clear up confusion among poor spellers. Objectives: Students will identify: 1. Spelling is a possible a task that student can achieve it. 2. The strategies that can be used to become a better speller. Materials: 1. "Words to Learn" sheet- "Look, Say, Cover, Write, Check" form - "Pal Check" form- Make Connections form-"Study Pal Assessment" form. 2. Spelling folder. 3. High frequency words list or students’ dictionary of desired words to be spelled correctly. 1
  • 2. 3. http://www.voki.com/pickup.php?scid=9200444&height=267&width=200 Procedure: Step 1: Words to Learn First, I make conference with each student to address spelling concerns. I ask my students to circle any words in their Notebook that they would like me to spell for them, and I correct them before they are placed on their "Words to Learn" sheet. This all goes in a spelling folder that each student has and maintains. I also ask students to be responsible on their own part and continually be on the lookout for words they may need to learn how to spell. I often utilize Fridays to remind students to update their lists, but it can work at anytime. Each student also has a personal dictionary that includes a list of commonly misspelled words. Several students choose these words, but they sometimes opt for a word of their picking from the dictionary itself. Words to Learn Template 2
  • 3. Monday: Look, Say, Cover, Write, Check On Mondays, each student takes time to complete the "Look, Say, Cover, Write, Check" form. Under the first column, students write the words correctly from their "Words to Learn" sheet. They look at the word, say the word, cover the word by folding the first column , write the word in column two, and check it under column three (by unfolding the first two columns). You can see a sample of this form: Look, Say, Cover, Write, Check form Word from list Student trial Check Tuesday/Wednesday: Pal Check & Practice On Tuesday or Wednesday students meet with their Study Pal and check each other's progress through the "Pal Check" form. This is also kept in each spelling notebook with many blank forms. The steps include the Pal reading the words to their partner and checking them. This is followed by trying it again if it is not correct the first time. (template form is attached below). 3
  • 4. Pal Check Form • Pal reads your words to you and then checks them. • Try again if they were not right. • Use your list and write it correctly in the last column if it was not correct. • Syllabicate the challenging words in order to write it correctly. Word Try again Correct spelling 4
  • 5. Thursday: Make Connections Here is another form that can be utilized for one of your spelling Study Pal sessions. It allows students to attack word parts from "Words to Learn" list. Words that are spelled correctly and mastered receive a check mark on the "Words to Learn" form (step 1). Words that are not 5
