National Museum of Art
Architect Zaha Hadid
Designed in 1998
Built in 1998-2010
Floors 3
Location Rome, Itlay
Construction Glass System and
Concrete
PROJECT
• The project was first announced in 2000 and took over 10 years to complete, during which
time there have been six changes of national government in Italy.
• The design of Zaha Hadid was the winner of an international design competition.
• MAXXI stands for Museum of arts of 21st century(National
Museum of 21st Century Art).
• The museum became the joint home of the MAXXI Arts
and MAXXI Architecture and Italy’s first national museum
solely dedicated to contemporary arts.
• Zaha Hadid architects, out of 273 candidates, won the
architectural competition to design the building in 1998
with a design that responds to the form and arrangement
of existing industrial buildings on the site.
• The building is a composition of bending
oblong tubes, overlapping, intersecting
and piling over each other, resembling a
piece of massive transport
infrastructure.
• It acts as a tie between the geometrical
elements already present.
• It is built on the site of old army barracks
between the river Tiber and via Guido
reni, the center is made up of spaces
that flow freely and unexpectedly
between interior and exterior, where
walls twist to become floors or ceilings.
• The building absorbs the landscape
structures, dynamizes them and gives
them back to the urban environment.
DESCRIPTION
• Zaha Hadid stated: "I see the MAXXI as
an immersive urban environment for
the exchange of ideas, feeding the
cultural vitality of the city.
• It's no longer just a museum, but an
urban cultural centre where a dense
texture of interior and exterior spaces
have been intertwined and
superimposed over one another. It's an
intriguing mixture of galleries, irrigating
a large urban field with linear display
surfaces".
Galleries, Walkways and Materials
• Located around a large full height space
which gives access to the galleries
dedicated to permanent collections and
temporary exhibitions, the auditorium,
reception services, cafeteria and
bookshop.
• Outside, a pedestrian walkway follows
the outline of the building, restoring an
urban link that has been blocked for
almost a century by the former military
barracks in Rome.
• Materials such as glass (roof), steel
(stairs) and cement (walls) give the
exhibition spaces a neutral appearance,
whilst mobile panels enable curatorial
flexibility and variety.
Materials such as glass (roof), steel (stairs) and
cement (walls) give the exhibition spaces a
neutral appearance, whilst mobile panels
enable curatorial flexibility and variety.
SINUOUS SHAPE
• The fluid and sinuous shapes, the variety and interweaving of spaces
and the modulated use of natural light lead to a spatial and functional
framework of great complexity, offering constantly changing and
unexpected views from within the building and outdoor spaces.

The Ascent at Roebling's Bridge
Architect DANIEL LIBESKIND
Designed in 2004
Built in 2005-2008
Floors 22
Location Covington, Kentucky
Construction Glass System and Concrete
Cost 50 million $
The curving crescent form and
sloping roofline of this 20-story
residential tower built in Covington,
Kentucky were designed to
maximize views for residents to
have unobstructed visibility from
every unit towards the Cincinnati
skyline that sits across the Ohio
River.
The reflections of sky and river also
introduce an accent of blue to an
otherwise earth-tone palette.
Reaching 300 feet at its pinnacle, the 300,000-square-foot building includes 70 residential
units, a swimming pool, garden facilities, large public event space, and a restaurant on the
plaza level.
Sizes of the units range between 950 and
7,000 sqf, with most being around 2,000 sqf.
Two elevator cores lead to the condominium
units, each with a different floor plan.
70 residential units, a
swimming pool, garden
facilities, large public
event space, and a
restaurant on the plaza
level.
History is not over….this building,
modern in design, is rooted in the
history, traditions and landscape
of Greater Cincinnati, and calls to
mind the possibilities that lie
ahead. The Ascent at Roebling’s
Bridge is a living, breathing work
that stirs the soul and lifts the
spirit.
/Daniel Libeskind
Through the vertical, non-repeating articulation of the
facade, the building breaks from the conventional,
horizontal orientation of typical high-rise buildings. Its
multiple layers blur the distinction between interior and
exterior, both visually and experientially. The resulting
texture also provides shade to all units from the eastern
sun.
The facade is a graphic pattern of pre-cast concrete and blue-
tinted glass that extends up one elevation, across the slanted,
curving roof, and back down the opposite elevation. Balconies
on the north and northeast sides look across the river to
Cincinnati.
The lobby colors are white and cool blues. The
black slate tile floor is decorated with stainless
steel Xs that are mirrored in the recessed
fluorescent ceiling lights above. The Owners Club
level, overlooking the lobby, has the same color
scheme.
THANK YOU !
