IN SUMMER-150˚C
IT IS USED TO CONTROL THE
ALL PARTS OF PLANTS
8. On horizontal curves, especially when they are not of very large
radius it is a common practice to widen the pavement slightly more
than the normal width, the object of providing extra widening on
horizontal surface because of two reason-
1. An automobile such as car, bus or truck has a rigid wheel base
and only the front wheels can be turned. when the vehicle
takes a turn to negotiate a horizontal curve, the rear wheels do
not follow the same path as that of the front wheels. This
phenomenon is called off tracking.
2. At more than design speed if super elevation and lateral
friction jointly can not counteract the centrifugal force.
3. At a start of curves.
9. WATER BOUND MACADAM
According to IRC
The pavement base coarse made of crushed or broken aggregate
mechanically interlocked by rolling and voids filled by screening
and binding material with assistance of water.
Aggregates are placed one over the other and binded them in
presence of water so it is called water bound macadam.
Layers Size
Sub base coarse 40-90mm
Base coarse 40-63mm
Surface 20-50mm
11. PROCEDURE
Preparation of sub grade
Pavement construction
Dry rolling (6ft, 10 tonne)
Wet rolling
Screening
Filler material
Surface finishing
12. Seal Coat: It is a thin surface treatment used to water
proof the surface and to provide skid resistance.
Tack Coat: It is a very light application of asphalt,
usually asphalt emulsion diluted with water. It provides
proper bonding between two layers of binder course and
must be thin, uniform cover the entire surface, and set
very fast.
Prime Coat: It is an application of low viscous cutback
bitumen to an absorbent surface like granular bases on
which binder layer is placed. Unlike tack coat, prime coat
penetrates into the layer below, plugs the voids, and forms
a water tight surface.
13. Objective-: To determine the binder content in the asphalt mix
Procedure -:
Heat the sample of core cutter until it become slurry
Weight the sample approx 700-1000gm
Weight the filler paper(3.5gm)
Wash the sample with benzene by putting inside bitumen extractor.
Placed the filter paper over the bowl of extraction apparatus.
Rotate the sample inside the extractor for few minutes and repeat the procedure one more time.
Dry the sample and weight it.
Calculation-:
Wt. of sample (w1)= 720 gm
Wt. of filter paper = 3.5 gm
Wt. of aggregate(w2)= 685 gm
After extraction wt. of filter paper=4.5 gm
Percentage of bitumen = 4.72%
14. Apparatus-:
Container, Needle, Water bath, Penetration apparatus
Time measuring device
Procedure-:
Preparation of test specimen
Pour into water bath tub
Cleaning of needle
Adjusting of needle
Release the needle
Adjust the penetration machine to measure the distance penetrated
Make at least 3 reading for accuracy
Reading-:
Test 1 65.4 mm
Test 2 69.8 mm
Test 3 66.5 mm
