The document outlines a movie pitch that follows a teenage male character dealing with grief after the death of his father and suicide of his girlfriend. It begins by showing him happy, then receiving devastating news in a flashback. Later, he turns to substance abuse but his friend helps him cope in a healthy way. The purpose is to highlight men's mental health issues and how people can support each other through difficult times. Character breakdowns describe average, ordinary people to show these issues can affect anyone. Details of production, legal/ethical considerations, target audience, and survey are also provided.
3. TREATMENT
• Treatment –
At the beginning of the film I am going to show the character being happy and this will be a
circular narrative therefore we see the character go through a tough time and we see this as
the character receives a phone call when he is having a good time and through facial
expressions we see this immediately change and then as a viewer we realize this was a
flashback.
In the middle of the film we see the main character deal with the death of his father and the
suicide of his girlfriend and turn to substance Abuse (alcohol ,drugs, smoking) and stops
attending school
At the end of the film we see through the help of his friend that is established through the
middle of the film that the character is in a happy place and deals with the death of his father
in a safe way.
4. PURPOSE
• The main purpose of this film is to show the effects of mental health and show
how a big event in somebody's life can effect them and how with support you can
deal with things safely. Furthermore I want to highlight men's mental health as it
is rarely spoken about and 12 men in the uk commit suicide everyday and is
much higher in men than women.
5. CHARACTER BREAKDOWNS
• The main character is average looking , and is from an average
background
and is meant to represent an average male in there teens , this is to
show
that these issues effect everyone ,and that the vast majority of people
will
experience some sort of grief in there life which will effect them and
people
deal with this in different ways.
Furthermore the clothing worn will be average and will not be flaunting
or wearing expensive clothing.
In addition too , the character will also be pretty reserved unless with
his close friends and has very few of these.
6. CHARACTER BREAKDOWN
• Dad- this character is vital to the story as the effect of this character is
the reason for the shift in the main characters life , the main character is
also deeply effected by the death of the father despite the father
feeding the main character abuse when he was alive , in which we see
through flashbacks.
Furthermore the character is also of a average background and is strict
7. CHARACTER BREAKDOWN
• The best friend – this character is vital as the best friend is the reason for
the change of the main character and helps put them on a better path ,
this character is from a average background and is the supportive figure
(the helper ) in the story and is very positive in addition too I will also be
making this character very significant within the story and use this
character to be a metaphor for reaching out for help and that there are
others who are willing and want to help.
8. CHARACTER BREAKDOWN
• The girlfriend , this character at first is seen as a positive for the main
character but this is only a temporary fix for dealing with his grief and
inevitably leads to an accidental suicide(via drugs) , in which effects the
character and puts them in a worse place then previously and starts
doing drugs and smoking heavier.
9. PRE PRODUCTION
• All characters will follow a basis around ‘average’ clothing , for example
the main character will be wearing a plain top , jeans and trainers , as
this is the type of clothing teenagers typically wear.
Furthermore the dad character will be wearing smarter clothing as older
people stereotypically dress in a smarter way (for jobs and casually)
16. DEVELOPMENT
• My idea could be adapted into a feature film , as making this short film
highlights the main ideas for this film , for example the film shows the
way a young teenager deals with his grief and has to use quick flash
backs to see him progressively better and with a full film there could
show in depth struggle and bring more emotion too these scenes, and
could include a scene were the main character is going through
withdrawal
17. LEGAL AND ETHICAL CONSIDERATION
• The main ethical issues I have is stereotyping the main character in
showing that he looks like ‘someone who would do drugs’ or ‘weak
minded’ as I intend to show a ‘normal’ / ‘average’ / ‘ordinary man’ .
The main legal issues is the use of drugs in my film , however these will
be props and will show no instruction of use of drugs and will be used
to show the harmful effects and to highlight the negatives that are
around drugs and will not ROMANTICISE which ahs been evident in
many media products.
Furthermore I will use a song by ‘crystal castles’ called Alice practice
• I will ensure that this does not happen by having 0 use of instruction in
relation to drugs and will only show the negative effects and how
the choice he made was a bad one.
19. TARGET AUDIENCE
• The main target audience for my short film will be 15-25 years old as
this is the key demographic of the main character and mental health
issues in younger people is on the rise , and this film may be supportive
to younger people. In addition too this film is very significant for all
people and especially in men with there being an increase in suicide
rates for men under 45. I will also aim to fit for the 7pm slot on channel
