Criteria for Diagnosis of Autism
■ Qualitative impairment in social
interaction such as eye to eye gaze,
facial expression and body postures.
■ Qualitative impairment in
communication such as delay in or
total lack of development of spoken
language.
■ Restricted repetitive and stereotyped
patterns of behavior, interests and
activities – one of the main areas of
focus of autism schools in NYC.
Differences in the Brain
■ Regulating emotional responses-
changes in the amygdala.
■ Regulating movement, balance or
coordination- Cerebellum.
■ Through the looking glass- Cerebral
cortex.
Characteristics
■ Autistic children typically can’t
pretend or imagine something that
isn’t real or couldn’t happen.
■ Lack of generalization and over
selectivity.
■ Distractibility and ritualistic.
An Early Intervention Program
■ Many autism schools in NYC
recommend for children, from 2 to 7
years of age, treatments for about
30-40 hours per week.
■ Many autism school in NYC have
highly trained therapists or teachers
and deliver the intervention under the
supervision of an experienced
professional.
■ Their main therapy is play- based
which uses reinforcement-based
strategies to improve children’s
behavior.
Methods and Strategies
■ Picture exchange communication.
■ Intensive interaction.
■ Video modeling and picture
instructions.
Therapies Involved
■ Physiotherapy.
■ Sensory stimulation.
■ Bio feedback and hypnotherapy.
