The impact of literature in modern society is undeniable. Literature acts as a form of expression for each individual author. Some books mirror society and allow us to better understand the world we live in.
In comparison of literature before and now, although there are differences between modern and contemporary literature, or traditional or 21st literature, there is still similarity between the two. Since both are forms literature, no matter the era, these expressions tackle something universal about the human condition, whether love, war, betrayal, respect, goodness, or justice. All literature captures a certain glimpse of life in the humanity:
It’s the 21st century. Everything is electronic, and social media is everywhere. Culture is a living, breathing thing, and everything from the way we speak to the way we write has changed from 2,000, or even 200, year ago.
The 21st century in literature refers to world literature produced during the 21st century. It is anything that was written and published in the year 2000s.

Digital Fiction is fiction that is written for and read from a computer and can be web- or app-based (for tablets and smartphones) or accessed via CD-ROMs. Digital fictions are different to e-books, however. Rather than existing as a digital version of a print novel, digital fictions are what are known as “born digital” – that is, they would lose something of their aesthetic and/or structural form and meaning if they were removed from the digital medium. Digital fictions therefore require that the reader interacts with the narrative throughout the reading experience and include texts such as hypertext fictions, Flash fictions and some video games.
Digi Fiction is a book that includes passcodes so that there is more information for the book online. It might be short videos to watch, or more text. Sometimes Digi Fiction can also mean that the entire book can be found in an online version only.

Word count: 128 words
First line: It was very early in the morning, the streets clean and deserted, I was walking to the station.
“The Metamorphosis,” “The Trial,” and “The Castle” are all very good stories, but “Give It Up!” is a perfect summation of the Kafkaesque: disconcerting and ultimately hopeless. Clocking in at just over 100 words, it’s also one of the most impressive feats of flash fiction by an author largely known for his full-length works.
Word count: 175 words
First line: My mother isn’t always Raggedy Ann, but she was when I was born.
This super-quick vignette from Becky Robison manages to be profoundly moving and disturbing at the same time. It details the circumstances of the narrator’s birth, during which her mother was dressed as Raggedy Ann… or had perhaps morphed into her, depending on how you interpret the poetic prose.
a six-word story allows a reader to consume an entire narrative in just a moment's time.
Good things famously come in small packages and often the same can be said for literature. We don’t always need to read 700 pages to be captivated by a story (we're looking at you, Donna Tartt). Often, it’s more fun to read something shorter and let our imaginations fill in the gaps.
The most famous example is probably: "For sale: baby shoes, never worn," which is often attributed (many believe wrongly) to Ernest Hemingway. The first “for sale” calls to mind a recognizable trope, followed by “baby shoes” a recognizable object, but it is the third element that turns this into a story. “Never worn” can invoke many possible meanings, but perhaps most common is the tragedy of child loss. Those baby shoes were never worn, because the baby wasn’t there to wear them.
See? A sentence containing just a handful of perfectly placed words is enough to hint at a larger story and hook a reader in.
