•Differentiate the 21st century literary
genres, and the one's from the
original genres;
•Enumerate the elements, structures
snd traditions of each genre;
•Appreciate the unique features of
each genre.
21st literature genre

Literary genre
•is a category of literary composition.
Genres may be determined by literary
technique, tone, content, or even (as in the
case of fiction) length.
•the most general genres in literature sre
epic, tragedy, comedy, and creative
nonfiction. They can all be on the form of
prose or poetry.
Chick lit
A genre fiction which addresses
issues of modern womanhood, often humorously
and lightheartedly
Elements:
•All features a woman in her twenties
or thirties as a protagonist who
loves fashion or obsessed with
fashion industry
Structure:
Full of silly antics and
delusional scenarios
•Covers of the book written are
full of pastels, lipsticks, and
shoes
•narrative
Tradition:
Women taking charge and
throwing off a sense of
independence.
•Make women realize that
they too can be strong and
dependent on themselves
Flash fiction
•A medium of brief and enclose
stories
•Average word count ranges anywhere
from five to 1,500 words
Elements:
•Realistic characters
•solid plot
•Gripping conflict
Structure:
Incorporates surprise, usually in
the form of a twist ending or an
unexpected last line.
Tradition:
•People used to read fables and
parables until writers started to
create flash fiction.
Drama
•this is a type of literature that
is meant to be performed in
front of an audience.
Subgenres of drama include
comedy, tragedy, and
tragicomedy.
Poetry
•It is an imaginative awareness of
experience expressed through
meaning, sound and rhythmic
language choices to evoke an
emotional response.
•It has been known to employ
meter and rhyme.
Digi-fiction
•Subgenre that combines three media:
book, movie, video and an internet
website
•Reader must be engaged in all three media
in order to understand the full story
Elements:
•Same elements with fiction
•combines with three media
Structure:
•Might be short videos to watch,
or more text.
•Can also mean that the entire book
can be found in an online version
only.
Tradition:
•Peoples attention span was becoming shorter, so
they rather choose
reading Digi-fiction to entertain themselves
Graphic novel
•Narrative work in which the story is
conveyed to the reader using comic
form
Elements:
•Panels, gutters, word of balloon,
narration, sound effect, motion, line,
and background colo
Tradition:
•During their free time,
they liked to read the
newspaper comic strip
until graphic novels made
it to the top.
•Usually 50 percent illustration,
50 percent text
•The reader must interpret the
images in order to comprehend
completely the story
Elements:
•Plot, character, setting, person
of view, theme, and style.
Structure:
•Drawing styles and handwriting
graphics to show stories.
Tradition:
•People nowadays like visuals They
are always on the move and work
around the clock so most of them
cannot spend a lot of time in
reading. They just look at the
illustrations.
Manga
•This is the Japanese word for
comics.
This genre considered as an
artistic and flowy storytelling
style.
•It’s panels were read from right
to left.

A genre of speculative fiction
dealing with imaginative concepts
Elements:
•Contains the usual elements of
the novel:a specific setting,
character development, plot,
themes, and structure
Structure:
•Text are often set in the
future in space , on a
different world, or in a
different universe or
dimension.
•has a relationship with the
principles of science
Tradition:
Emerged in the west, where
industrial revolution resulted
to social transformation then
writers and intellectuals
assumed the future impact of
technology
