4. Characteristics of ISO Containers
○ It is made up of weathering steel (CORTEN Steel /
non corrosive)
○ The containers have standardized dimensions.
Length : 20Ft, 40Ft, 45 Ft
(10 ft & 53 Ft are also available)
Width : 8Ft
Height: 8.6 Ft (Standard) & 9.6 Ft (High Cube)
5. Concept of TEU (Twenty-foot Equivalent Unit)
It is a standard unit for describing a ship's
cargo carrying capacity, or a shipping
terminal's cargo handling capacity.
A standard twenty-foot (20 x 8 x 8.6 feet)
container equals One TEU.
6. Benefits of Containerisation
Containers can be loaded and unloaded, stacked,
transported efficiently over long distances, and transferred
from one mode of transport to another.
Containers can be used with ships, rail flatcars, and semi-
trailer trucks—without being opened.

• Enroute: In the defined route.
• Bulk cargo: A cargo commodity that is transported
unpackaged in large quantities. For example, coal and
gravel.
• Fright Forwarders : They consolidate small shipments
into large ones and then forward to the destination.

● A bill of lading (BL or BoL) is a legal document issued by a
carrier to a shipper that details the type, quantity, and
destination of the goods being carried.
● A bill of lading also serves as a shipment receipt when the
carrier delivers the goods at a predetermined destination.
