One of the Longest Celebrated
Hindu Festival
In South India, Navratri is
celebrated for nine days
Following the new moon day during
the tamil month of Purattasi
(September - October).
3. Nine forms of Shakti are worshipped during the
Navaratris.
1. Durga
2. Bhadrakali
3. Amba
4. Annapoorna Devi
5. Sarvamangala
6. Bhairavi
7. Chandika
8. Lalita
9. Bhavani
4. Each day significance
First day- Goddess Kumari
Second day – Parvathi
Third day – Kali
Fourth , fifth, sixth day – Lakshmi
Seventh ,eighth, ninth day –Saraswati
5. During Navratri, some devotees of
Durga observe a fast and prayers are
offered for the protection of health and
prosperity.
7. During the nine days of Navratri there is a custom
of wearing different colour dress – Sarees (Sari)
and Churidhar – mainly in Gujarat and
Maharashtra.
8. Both men and women usually wear
colorful costumes while performing
garba and dandiya.
12. Bommai Kolu
Bommai is the word for Doll

14. About Kolu – First Three Steps
The first three steps are filled with dolls of the
deities, various God and Goddess are displayed here.
The main being Sri Durga Lakshmi and Saraswathi.
15. About Kolu – 4th, 5th & 6th Steps
Next three steps are filled with
religious saints, Gurus, and notable
figures of the world .
16. About Kolu –7th Step
The seventh step is dedicated to various social
activities and festivals.
People depict marriages and important festivals in
this step
17. About Kolu – 8th Step
The 8th step is filled with wooden dolls and hand
made pieces, that reveals the talent of the lady of the
house.
18. About Kolu – 9th Step
The last step is generally done by the little children
and comprise of their toys and small theme works,
like a grocery shop or a playground etc.
Colorful designs called rangoli is drawn in front of
the set up
20. The final set of three days is spent in worshiping
the goddess of wisdom, Saraswati.
In some parts of South India, Saraswati puja is
performed on the 9th day.
21. Ayudha Puja
Conducted in many parts of South India on the
Mahanavami (Ninth) day.
Weapons, agricultural implements, all kinds of
tools, equipments, machinery and automobiles are
decorated and worshipped on this day along with
the worship of Goddess.
22. The tenth day as Vijaya Dashami
Rama's party found Sita and defeated
Ravana.
Thus it is termed as Vijaya Dashami.
