4. INTRODUCTION OF PLC
• Programmablelogiccontrollers(PLCs)havebeenanintegralpartoffactoryauto
mationandindustrialprocesscontrolfordecades.PLCscontrolawidearrayofapp
licationsfromsimplelightingfunctionstoenvironmentalsystemstochemicalpro
cessingplants.Thesesystemsperformmanyfunctions,providingavarietyofanal
oganddigitalinputandoutputinterfaces;signalprocessing;dataconversion;and
variouscommunicationprotocols.AllofthePLC'scomponentsandfunctionsare
centeredaroundthecontroller,whichisprogrammedforaspecifictask.
• ThebasicPLCmodulemustbesufficientlyflexibleandconfigurabletomeetthed
iverseneedsofdifferentfactoriesandapplications.Inputstimuli(eitheranalogor
digital)arereceivedfrommachines,sensors,orprocesseventsintheformofvolta
georcurrent.ThePLCmustaccuratelyinterpretandconvertthestimulusfortheC
PUwhich,inturn,definesasetofinstructionstotheoutputsystemsthatcontrolac
tuatorsonthefactoryfloororinanotherindustrialenvironment
